First Cuil, now Yuil

p2pnet news view | Advertising:- Cuil is supposed to be like, kewl, ya know?

From Stanford professor Tom Costello and ex-Google search architect Anna Patterson, it was launched as a fully fledged (no beta) service, with less than idea results.

Under p2pnet.net, for example, we got ‘Project Gotham Racing Series’ and ‘Wired magazine people’.

Uh, yeh. ;)

“Cuil launched with a lot of promise, but it’s been bashed widely since Day 1,” observes NetworkWorld. “While there is still time to tweak the search engine and fix the obvious bugs, getting past the initial bad press just makes its gargantuan task of challenging Google all that much harder.”

Now meet Yahoo’s Yuil.

Or not.

“It was only a matter of time,” says the Washington Post.

“Cuil, the ‘massive’ new search engine that was supposed to be able to keep up with Google, has just gotten its first knockoff. It’s Yuil, a Yahoo-powered mashup that looks almost exactly like Cuil. And, oddly enough, Yuil might actually work better than its much-hyped predecessor.”

Like, Cuil!

Because it’s actually a promo / marketing stunt for Yahoo’s BOSS and, of course, its own search engine.

It was dreamed up by Yahoo VP of platforms Sam Pullara, as the Post points out.

“I’m sure everyone saw the recent announcement of a new search engine, Cuil,” says Pullara in the not-Yuil site, which now reads: “Updated Again: Yuil is dead. However, you can always get the same great search results here - ” (You know where.)

He adds, “I thought I would have a little fun with it and put together a quick parody of it by mashing up their UI and Yahoo!’s search results. As usual, the biggest problems I had were related to my pathetic Python skills. I’d love to add the category stuff in (Yahoo! has that info as you can see in search assist) but BOSS doesn’t yet have that in the API.  But it does have web and image search and even search suggestions.”

  1. Eric Says:

“BOSS” was the name of an evil supercomputer in a 1970s episode of Doctor Who. Like most 1970s evil supercomputers, it took over operations at a major corporation, went mad and tried to destroy the world.
