Company run by Italian PM sues Google
p2pnet news view | Movies:- Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has apparently picked up on a specious theme originally generated by Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG’s RIAA —- that if something shows up online, it automatically equals a sale lost to the corporate owner.
Mediaset SpA, a TV company he controls, is suing Google and its YouTube for, “at least” 500 million euros ($779 million),” says Bloomberg News.
“According to a sample analysis run by Mediaset on June 10, at least 4,643 videos belonging to the company were found on YouTube,” says the story, going on, “That equals more than 325 hours of broadcasting without corresponding rights, the company said.”
Based on, “the number of its clips available on YouTube and the hits generated,” Mediaset lost the equivalent of 315,672 broadcasting days.”
And that, in turn, equals 500 million euros in “immediate damages,” Mediaset said in the statement, adding:
“Lost advertising revenue linked to the videos may add to the amount of compensation demanded, Mediaset said.”
“Gestevision Telecinco SA, a Mediaset unit that owns Spain’s most-watched TV station, sued YouTube last month for copyright infringement and illegally posting its video content,” notes Bloomberg News.
Forbes estimates Berlusconi to be worth $9.4 billion.
