Internet2 and ‘Internet 3′
p2pnet news view P2P | Freedom:- Three years ago, “Two of the three most lethal and determined enemies of innovation and online freedom have joined Internet2 to, ’study advanced content distribution technologies’,” p2pnet posted, going on:
“The MPAA and RIAA have become corporate members, says Internet2, which describes itself as a, ‘consortium being led by 207 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow’s Internet’.”
“Internet2 networking is an incredibly exciting tool for researchers, technologists and many others interested in developing new technologies, policies and business models for the next generation,” Internet2 had RIAA spinster-in-chief Cary Sherman saying.
Now, “The leaders of Internet2 are lending a hand to what could be called ‘Internet 3′,” says Wired Campus, going on that Internet2 will, “loan a small part of its network backbone to GENI, a research project hoping to design an updated replacement for the current Internet”.
But, “This doesn’t mean your course Web pages will load faster anytime soon,” says the story.
“GENI’s leaders are still deciding what kind of approach they should take to building a replacement Internet. And then they’ll most likely build an even bigger experimental network to test their ideas, which, if they work, could be incorporated into a new network.”
Do you reckon GENI’s leaders will make sure there’s some kind of forum so the people who use the Net —- you and I —- can contribute an idea or 10?
Don’t hold your breath and meanwhile, “GENI, the Global Environment for Network Innovations, is envisioned as a national resource for experiments on a wide variety of advanced research in communications, networking, distributed systems, cyber-security, and networked services and applications,” says the Internet2 press release, adding:
“It is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. GENI will afford the research community the opportunity to try out novel ideas and clean-slate designs on a large-scale real-world environment with real user populations. The GENI Project Office, which is based at BBN Technologies, is responsible for project management and design of the GENI facility.”
BBN is, “perhaps best known for its work in the development of packet switching (including the ARPANET and the Internet) and for its 1978 acoustical analysis for the House Select Committee on the assassination of John F. Kennedy,” says the Wikipedia, adding:
“But it is also a defense contractor, primarily for DARPA.”
Of the six people running the GENI project, it appears only two aren’t linked directly to BBN.
Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG’s RIAA also has direct links to the BBN.

I remember being excited at the possibilities of a completely new internet, one where security, privacy and speed came first, but sadly have long since given up hope as it became more and more clear what the reality was going to be. Since most ISP’s drag their heels and like to pocket the majority of their profits rather than reinvest into their current networks where it is sorely needed, most of us will have long been dead by the time humanity actually sees anything remotely like Internet x.0 benefiting the public at large. If it ever does arrive, I strongly suspect it will be horribly fettered and completely lack any privacy whatsoever thanks in large part to the involvement of organizations such as the RIAA and MPAA, groups whom I guarantee have only their own interests in mind regardless of anything they may say to the contrary. Make me want to cry.
