Traffic throttler Sandvine strikes it rich

p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- “Just before the FCC brought the hammer down on Comcast for using Sandvine to block users’ freedom of choice, the company announced two deals with countries in a region notorious for blocking freedoms!”

So blogs Robb Topolski (right) on his Funchords blog.

Regular p2pnet readers will know Sandvine is the company which supplies technology used by ISPs to block the accounts of certain users, ie, those with P2P filesharing applications.

Recently, “Is Canada’s Sandvine sinking?” – wondered p2net, going on:

“It’s the purveyor of the grossly misnamed FairShare bandwidth management product, p2pnet posted in May.

“But apparently, all is not well with its efforts to cash in on Net censorship and  corporate plans to nobble Net neutrality.”

However,  that was then and this is now and, says Topolski, the Net protocol expert who’s also chief technology consultant at Free Press and Public Knowledge.

Thompson Financial News says that Sandvine has landed deals with the Arab kingdoms of Qatar and Kuwait,” he says, continuing

Qatar, which to its credit is one of the more open Arab nations in that it generally allows for several press freedoms, regularly blocks Internet sites.

Kuwait used to be free of Internet censorship (1999) but times seem to be changing (2007), and the oil-rich country we rescued from Iraqi invaders has recently been cracking down against members of the media for criticizing religious or government leaders.

Both countries are buying Sandvine’s “Traffic Policy” equipment.

So, Sandvine – the world’s leading generator of TCP Reset packets – sees a open future in selling to those who would block its people from theirs. To serve this new customer base, Sandvine has set up new offices in Dubai, and its stock has raised from $0.90 to $1.10 since the deal, a significant turn-around following its $7.10 peak before the Comcast story broke.

Now you know.

(Cheers, Robb)
