Finally: new WinMX release
p2pnet.net News:- The last time anything happened with WinMX - among the best of the best - was back on May 14, 2002, when v 3.1 went online.
Guaranteed spyware-free, the current version, 3.31, was launched on October 19, 2002, and since then there’s been, well, the sound of silence.
That was fixed yesterday, however, when, Frontcode Technologies released a beta which, it promises, will lead to a fully upgraded general release of a new WinMX - 3.5, also guaranteed to be free of all intrusive apps.
Download the beta here but, as Frontcode says, if you don’t consider yourself to be an experienced user, you may want to wait for the full WinMX release - which could be within the week, if not sooner.
Here’s the timetable, as per the news page:
Current Beta Test:
WinMX v3.52 BETA
This version features a new WPNP Channel hosting component, as well as several key upgrades to the channel client window and controls. The channel list now features a filter bar making finding a known channel very easy. Other various minor upgrades.
Testing started: June 13, 2004 1730 GMT
Estimated Duration: under 1 week, maybe under 1 day
Release Status: To be fully released upon test completion
Upcoming Beta Tests:
WinMX v3.55 BETA
This version includes a very important upgrade to the core WPNP primary connection protocol, and an important change to the Search Window. With the protocol upgrade it is hoped search coverage will be near-100%, which will translate into vastly-improved search results, especially for rare files. The protocol upgrade is also a preliminary step toward a persistent hotlist (which will be in an upcoming test.)
Test Not Started Yet
Estimated Duration: 1-2 weeks
Release Status: Unknown, dependant on test duration and results.
WinMX v3.60 BETA
File downloads are sourced and managed by a completely new system in this version. AFS/AEQ are gone, also file mismatches should no longer be a problem. Minor WPNP file transfer protocol upgrades. Fragmented file support added.
Test Not Started Yet
Estimated Duration: 2 weeks
Release Status: Immediate release unlikely, network turn-over required.

I’ve gotten it and run it. Sadly I am still waiting for the “improvements” they have always told us would be coming. This beta release is a let down. So far in the release they have “improved” hosting capabilities and extended host only commands to users in the channel. Granted it was needed but their system of user “levels” sucks. no other word for it. to be able to type /me or /emote or /action you need to be a user at “level 60″ wth??? while I can understand the need for extending host commands to users in the channel wtf??? now I need permission to do something I could do before?
Let nushi(RCMS,MxChat, MxMonitor), bughunter(kick-it, ignition), bender(metis/mxcontrol/bendmx) and others handle the channel/hosting side of winmx; what they have done in frontcodes absence has been great and far superior to anything frontcode has shown me so far.
I want to see the serious improvements, improved searching capabilities, lower queues, end of file mismatches etc. Far as i am concerned what i have seen after waiting almost two years was a waste of my time.
ps: above all else I want to see an end to winmx being a resource hog that leaks RAM!!!

As far as im concerned. winmx is dead. I deleted it quite a while ago and now see no need to go back to it.

Great. I love WinMX and I will try the new version. As long as people like those other 2 turkeys don’t like it, the lower it will remain on the radar screen. Fine with me.
