Blackberry Bold vs Apple iPhone

p2pnet news view | Mobiles:- The 3G BlackBerry Bold, RIM’s answer to the troubled Apple iPhone, which is apparently suffering from connection issues, is now on sale in Canada for $400 on a three-year voice and data plan.

But you have to sign up with Rogers to get one.

And if you do, Rogers’ is having reception problems of its own, says the Toronto Star.

“Executives from Rogers Wireless are downplaying reports of reception issues with Apple Inc.’s iPhone and Research In Motion Ltd.’s new BlackBerry Bold,” it says, going on:

“Patrick Spence, a vice-president at RIM, didn’t deny the reports of 3-G reception issues outright, but cautioned that there are several possible reasons why individual users experience problems with any wireless device, ranging from signal strength inside particular buildings to overcast skies.

“3-G is a relatively new technology and wireless in general isn’t easy,” the story has him saying.

Rogers was on the receiving end of heavy online flak when it wanted to to lock Canadians looking to buy an Apple iPhone into a three-year contract —- without unlimited use.

“Rogers is now apparently trying to defuse the PR disaster with a $30-a-month data deal subscribers can add to their voice plans,” said p2pnet at the time.

“Rogers Communications has caved into consumer pressure and is offering a limited rollback of rates for the new Apple iPhone 3G being launched Friday, said the Vancouver Sun,. “The new Rogers rate, available only for subscribers who activate their phones before Aug. 31, is $30 a month for a six-gigabyte data plan that can be added to new or existing voice plans with Rogers – but only if they sign up for a three-year contract.”

As well as Wi-Fi, nice for people near hot spots, the Bold has:

480×320 resolution at 217 ppi) color display
QWERTY keyboard
Internal GPS and BlackBerry(R) Maps
Tri-band HSDPA and quad-band EDGE support
Email and Web capabilities
Media player for music, video and pictures
3.5mm headset jack
2 Megapixel camera with flash, zoom and video recording
DataViz(R) Documents To Go(R) preinstalled for Word, Excel and PowerPoint

With the iPhone, “customers around the globe have complained about dropped calls and other connection issues,” says USA Today.

“Such drops apparently occur when calls are handed off from the 3G network to a slower network, such as AT&T’s Edge, when 3G isn’t available,” it says.

“News reports placed at least part of the blame on faulty 3G chipsets from German chipmaker Infineon Technologies. If it is a chip problem, it’s uncertain if all the connection troubles can be solved by Apple’s latest software update alone.”

One Response to “Blackberry Bold vs Apple iPhone”

  1. Crazy me Says:

I have had my hands on the Blackberry Bold and it fits nicely into the hand. I think you will all find it a lot thinner then it looks in the photos, I work for vodafone myself and have been holding out for a new smart photo, Form me it was between the Samsung i900 and the Bold. We got the i90o the other day and as good as it looks and its spec kida matches the bold. The Windows OS and slowed it rite down. Yes the i900 has the 5mp camera but you can only open the cam applications once everything else is shut down otherwise it does not have enough system memory. As always Windows Mobile’s ways of making it hard to shut down applications have spoilt i good looking high spec device. The blackberry bold has the capability to open and edit Microsoft Documents while running the BB OS that we all know it quick. BB virgins should not be put off by using a different OS as this is fantastic and after a few days you will never go back. The Bold should be in Vodafone stores on 4th September.
