Don’t sue your customers! — EA Sports boss

p2pnet news view RIAA | Music | Games:- EA Sports boss Peter Moore thinks the gaming industry has something to learn from the Big 4 record labels, namely, It’s not smart to sue the people who keep you in business.

We’ve been wondering if the Entertainment Software Association is getting ready to introduce RIAA-style sue ‘em all tactics into the North American gaming arena.

Ex-RIAA honcho Michael Gallagher effectively runs the organization and, not at all coincidently, Kenneth ‘HorrorShow’ Doroshow, another former RIAA enforcer, recently signed up.

“So now we have two ex-RIAA hitmen in senior ESA positions,” said p2pnet.

But anti-consumer crackdowns are already happening in Europe.

Atari, TopWare Interactive, Reality Pump, Techland and Codemasters have hired infamous UK law firm Davenport Lyons to threaten 25,000 people across the UK with lawsuits unless they agree to pay £300 (about $556) in extortion, a technique much favored by Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG’s RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).

“If they refuse they risk being taken to court with plans to target the first legal actions against 500 people who ignore their letters,” says Mail Online.

But EA Sports boss Peter Moore doesn’t think that’s a good idea, warning, “It didn’t work for the music industry,” says Eurogamer.

“I’m not a huge fan of trying to punish your consumer,” he said at the Leipzig Games Convention.

“Albeit these people have clearly stolen intellectual property, I think there are better ways of resolving this within our power as developers and publishers. Yes, we’ve got to find solutions. We absolutely should crack down on piracy. People put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into their content and deserve to get paid for it. It’s absolutely wrong, it is stealing.

“But at the same time I think there are better solutions than chasing people for money. I’m not sure what they are, other than to build game experiences that make it more difficult for there to be any value in pirating games.”

If anything had been learned from the music business, “they just don’t win any friends by suing their consumers,” Moore observed.  “Speaking personally, I think our industry does not want to fall foul of what happened with music.”

According to Eurogamer, Moore says he he doesn’t know of any company plans to, “chase down consumers”.
