2 Quebec deaths linked to listeria poisoning

p2pnet news view | Off Topic:- The buck stops here, Maple Leaf Foods president Michael McCain said yesterday as his company company unequivocally shouldered the blame for the outbreak of listeria poisoning.

He apologized to the families of victims in a YouTube video.

But meanwhile, another two people have died in Quebec, and brands of cheese made in the province were pulled after local health officials found contamination from a strain.

“Ministry officials warned consumers not to eat Riopelle de l’Île cheese purchased at Aux Petits Délices in Quebec City between Aug. 6 and Aug. 11,” says the CBC.

“A similar warning was issued for Mont-Jacob sold with an Aug. 29 best before date at Octofruit Maître Gourmet in Ste-Thérèse.

“The strain of listeria is different from the one found in Maple Leaf Foods deli meats linked to a nationwide listeriosis outbreak and 15 deaths.”

Six fatalities in Canada have been traced back to Maple Leaf Foods products processed at the company’s Toronto plant, says the Canwest News Service, going on:

“Federal public health officials are investigating an additional nine deaths. In all, there have been 29 confirmed cases of listeriosis across Canada, including 22 in Ontario, four in B.C., one in Saskatchewan, and two in Quebec.”

In QAuebec, “Horatio Arruda, Quebec’s public health director, said there are at least nine cases of listeriosis associated with the recalled cheeses,” says the CBC.

Officials, “are awaiting test results from a man who died Tuesday night to determine whether the death is linked to contaminated cheese,” it states, quoting Guy Auclair, the department’s director of food inspection, as saying provincial inspectors have visited the cheese manufacturing factories and are awaiting test results.

“Officials have yet to determine how listeria came into contact with the cheese,” the story adds.

The Quebec public health department says there have been 42 cases of listeriosis reported this year in Quebec, where the annual average is around 50, says CTV, going on:

“Two people with listeriosis have died in Quebec in recent days. One of them had the strain linked to Maple Leaf Foods, but in the other case the strain has not yet been determined.”

  1. Reader's Write Says:

Having worked at a Maple Leaf bacon plant for 2.5 years I know people don’t always follwo the “little” (in their opinion) rules like gum chewing and wearing of watches inside the food production area.

that explains the lithium watch battery I found in my frying pan.
