Malaysia Today blocked online

p2pnet news view | Politics:- “I know this is going to sound faintly ludicrous, but the Malaysia that has emerged after the March 8 elections is still better than the one that existed before,” says Karim Raslan in the Star Online.

“It’s more open, more diverse and infinitely more lively; in short it’s less ‘Barisan’ and more Malaysian because (surprise, surprise) the two are not one and the same.”

But, “ALERT” – says a notice on Malaysia Today.

“Malaysia Today is being blocked by Malaysian government. To access use the address http://mt.m2day.org/2008/    You can check the site status at http://m2day.org/ or google for ‘Malaysia Today‘.”

That’s how the country has chosen to celebrate its 51st anniversary.

“According to a report on Thursday by online news portal Malaysiakini, the MCMC chief operating officer, Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi, confirmed that the commission was behind the site blackout,” says CNET News, quoting sharil as saying, “It is being blocked because we found that some of the comments on the Web site were insensitive, bordering on incitement.”

Local news reports indicate users were unable to access Malaysia Today through three major ISPs: TMnet, Maxis, and Time, says the story, though, “a check by ZDNet Asia on Thursday evening found that the portal could still be accessed through a mirror site”.

In a media statement, Salahuddin Hashim, secretary general of the opposition People’s Justice Party, warned this marks “the first step in a comprehensive and reprehensible attempt to curb the access of Malaysians to the Internet,” says CNET, adding:

“The Web has in the past few years been ‘the bastion of freedom’ for Malaysians seeking alternative views, Salahuddin said.

“When contacted, Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) was not available for comment.”
