Twilight Saga vampire book leaked online

p2pnet news view | P2P:- Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight Saga, a series about vampires written for teenage girls and which has achieved virtual cult status, says she’s putting  the latest book “indefinitely” on hold after it was leaked online.

“Recovered from the vampire attack that hospitalized her in the conclusion of Twilight, Bella celebrates her birthday with her boyfriend Edward and his family, a unique clan of vampires that has sworn off human blood.”

That’s the opening paragraph in the promo blurb to another of the books, New Moon, but, “As some of you may have heard, my partial draft of Midnight Sun was illegally posted on the Internet and has since been virally distributed without my knowledge or permission or the knowledge or permission of my publisher,” she says on her web site.

Meyer, however, believes she has a good idea of how the leak happened, “as there were very few copies of Midnight Sun that left my possession and each was unique.

“Due to little changes I made to the manuscript at different times, I can tell when each left my possession and to whom it was given,” she says, going on »»»

The manuscript that was illegally distributed on the Internet was given to trusted individuals for a good purpose. I have no comment beyond that as I believe that there was no malicious intent with the initial distribution.”
She adds
As the author of the Twilight Saga, I control the copyright and it is up to the owner of the copyright to decide when the books should be made public; this is the same for musicians and filmmakers. Just because someone buys a book or movie or song, or gets a download off the Internet, doesn’t mean that they own the right to reproduce and distribute it. Unfortunately, with the Internet, it is easy for people to obtain and share items that do not legally belong to them. No matter how this is done, it is still dishonest. This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control.

So where does this leave Midnight Sun? My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn’t dovetail too well with the original story.

Some 50 million copies of the books have been sold worldwide and the series has been translated into over 20 different languages, says the Wikipedia.

An online draft is not the same thing as an actual book, so I don’t believe it would hurt potential sales. In fact the publicity surrounding it might actually help physical sales. This incessant whining regarding copyrights and online file sharing is the zenith of banality. Accept reality and move on!

” Some 50 million copies of the books have been sold worldwide ”

Yup looks like downloading really hurt her sales, didn’t it.

” says she’s putting the latest book “indefinitely” on hold after it was leaked online. ”

That’ll teach ‘em, I won’t sell anything at all to punish the evil pirates.
    Duuuuurrrrr.

Now let’s compare this author to Dmitry Glukhovsky, who wrote a post-nuclear book “Metro”.

Dmitry was posting the book to his site, chapter by chapter, and built a forum on it. He ended the book at 15 chapters, but the fans did not like the ending, so, he rewrote chapters 14 and 15, and added chapters 16 to 20 and moved the site from a free hosting to http://www.m-e-t-r-o.ru.

After the book had considerable online success, he went ahead and published a paper version, “Metro 2033″. On LiveJournal, there were several possible book covers posted by users.

And here is a gallery of illustrations made by fans:

As for Stephenie Meyer, she looks like Indiana Gregg of book publishing to me.

    FAIL.

Note that the online version of the book “Metro” is still posted on http://www.m-e-t-r-o.ru , and the fan forum is still running (there are some nice fan fiction stories based on “Metro”). Dmitry Glukhovsky is working on a new book, “Sumerki” (”Twilight”, ah, the irony!) and the idea is the same: publishing the book in electronic form as it is being written, chapter by chapter. http://www.s-u-m-e-r-k-i.ru/

There are also Pavel Shumilov, sci-fi author who published a few books, but then had row with publishers and made all books available on-line: http://www.dragonbase.narod.ru/start.htm . All his new books are uploaded there too. Also, he have some texts translated by fans into several languages including English: http://www.dragonbase.narod.ru/books.htm#2

  10. Loyal Fan Says:

That’s awful, whether it was a mistake or not. And boo-hiss to those who aren’t being understanding!!
I think, as fans, we should let Stephanie Meyer go through a stage of debate, and hope that she comes back with the imaginative energy to complete the book. I promise to buy 5 copies!!

But, yes mood affects an author, and who can write about love and indepth when you’re pissed off?
Regardless of whether or not it’s widely online, I won’t read it, and I’m sure there are others that feel the same way! Stephanie, you have loyal fans!!
