Beheaded man Tim McLean’s family sue killer
p2pnet news view Off Topic | Crime:- The parents of Tim McLean, who was only 22 when he was savagely attacked and beheaded on a Greyhound Canada bus, are suing the company, the Canadian government and Vince Weiguang Li (right), the man who killed him.
Together, they’re seeking $60,000.
Eleven other family members each want $10,000 but,”This lawsuit is not about money,” the Winnipeg Free Press has lawyer Jay Prober stating.
“It’s about getting answers, so that his death might not be a total waste …that there might be some good to come out of it.”
The McLeans say Greyhound and the federal government failed to ensure the safety of the travelling public, “while the RCMP are coming under attack for allowing the accused killer to remain on the bus for several hours with McLean’s body,” says the story.
Li and Mclean were sitting side by side on a Greyhound bus on its way to Winnipeg when Li, “calmly started stabbing” McLean, who was sleeping next to him, and then cut his head off, p2pnet said.
He cannibalized his victim before being captured by the RCMP.
The first time Li appeared in court, “Please kill me,” he begged, said the Globe and Mail.

Sometimes you have to wonder. The parents and family of this victim are grieving but come on. They won’t get a dime from the killer. Does anyone expect a bus company to protect them from knife-wielding killers? I certainly don’t. I do expect them to maintain their buses for safety as in driving. If Greyhound is held culpable it sets a very bad precedent. Imagine I am standing on the McLean family’s lawn and I get hit by a car. Well then my family should be able to sue because that family did not look out for the protecting of citizens. That just sounds ludicrous but that is what these people are doing.

Wow! Things must be different in Canada. If this was the US, that number would be more like $25 million. If Greyhound proposed $60k as a settlement to make the family go away, their laywer would just laugh.

@2600 – Did you read the article? It’s not about the money, it’s about answers. The amount is peppercorn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppercorn_(legal) They want the legal process to bring out information that they believe is hidden, or requires further scrutiny.

Hey Canada, do you want a cut-rate version of the friggin’ Keystone Kops a.k.a. the TSA at every bus stop in Canada? Do you want to PAY for it. Think about it. I have real sympathy for the family of the victim to a point, but this lawsuit thing is whack. There is no amount of nanny-state flavored “protection” that will be effective against bat-shite crazy psychopaths.

Right…

As much as I hate to admit it, trying to sue the government and bus company for something that a raging lunatic did, is just daft.
I fully understand the grievance that that the family may have about the death of a family member, looking for conspiracies won’t bring that person back.
The only thing that the family will possibly gain from suing the government and bus company, is to have the bug company to do a full body cavity search (aka.. Airport security style) for all people entering the bus.
Then they would probably be the first people in the picket line complaining about how the country is becoming a totalitarian state.
Think I’m being going a bit overboard? Then think what has happened since 911.
People who had relatives that were killed, or were just horrified at what happened, went up in arms against the airports for not having enough security, and against the government for not trying hard enough to sniff out terrorists before they attack.
The result? We now can no longer carry drinks onto the plain, unless we buy it for 3 times as much in the departure area. You need to take out all computers and electrical devices, so that they can send them through the x-ray separately. You need to take you shoes off (even if the soles are see-through (I once saw a woman with a pair of plastic sandals, that had clear soles, ordered to take them off so that they could scan them. People of middle eastern decent, as people from the Islamic faith were illegally detain by hillbilly cops, and local people who were “trying to keep their country safe”(which is really a joke, unless they were of Native American decent).
So back to the situation with the bus. Suing the bus company and government and Bus company because “it’s not for the money, it’s for the answers”, is nothing more than “we suffered, and we want to drag as many people into our sorrow as we can”. Of course, this is unless they feel that there should be government watching everyone, as in “1984″.
Again, I have nothing but condolences for the families in mourning, but until someone figures out a way to undo a wrongful death, there is nothing more that the victims can do, other than hope that the defendant suffers as much as possible, for as long as possible.
Just my two cents

I’ll throw my two cents in with yours.
Total agreement.

Why such a small amount? These poor people should get way more than that. If bus companies have not thought of contingencies to prevent this and other type of violence well than they should. No amount of money will erase this terrible tragedy but I think they should avve sues for at least $100M. The bus company should at a minnimum have entry metal detectors.

Another comment – I am in somewhat agreement with Two Cents – BUT – I feel very bad for this family and think they should get something. It seems like something should come out of this to help dull their pain. I do realize this guy was just a nut and it would have been hard to mitigate this though. Metal detectors would help I think though.
