Heavy metal fans ‘gentle,’ jazz fans ‘creative’

Country and western fans are, “hardworking and shy, whereas rap fans are outgoing,” and, contrary to the stereotype, “heavy metal fans are gentle and at ease with themselves.”
So says professor Adrian North of Scotland’s Heriot-Watt University in People into Music, the largest study of its kind. Some 36,518 participants from around the world enabled him to examine links between people’s personalities and the music they like.
“Researchers have been showing for decades that fans or rock and rap are rebellious, and that fans of opera are wealthy and well-educated, but this is the first time that research has shown that personality links to liking for a wide range of musical styles,” he says.
The researchers also found personality and lifestyle said a lot about the kind of emotional reactions to music.
“If listeners preferred exciting, punchy music they were more likely to be on a higher earning bracket with those opting for relaxing sounds more inclined to be lower down the pay scale,” says North.

Nor is this the first time he’s cashed in on the effects music might have on people.
“Scientists said their research had established for the first time that music influenced taste, and claimed the results could have important implications for restaurateurs,” said The Telegraph recently, going onto quote North as saying, “It is widely acknowledged within the scientific community that music affects behaviour, however this is the first time it has been scientifically proven that music can affect perception in other senses and change the way wine tastes.
“The research showed that when a powerful, heavy piece of music is heard, a wine such as Cabernet Sauvignon is perceived as being 60 per cent more powerful, rich and robust than when no music is heard.”
