Spears at MTV awards, ’schticky media event’

A year after her MTV VMA disaster, Britney Spears “overshadowed’ the 2008 event without actually doing anything, by all accounts.

Her appearance was, “so hyped by the network” all she had to do was, “read a cue card at a mile a minute,” and, ” walk around with a beauty pageant smile,” says Ann Powers in  the Los Angeles Times.

She won Female Video, Pop Video and Video of the year, “which would have been impressive at any other awards show,” says the story, but, “But this sweep felt meaningless, not only because the actual winners are the least important part of this staged and schticky media event.

“What viewers witnessed every time Britney took the stage (or appeared in an MTV promotional skit, like the dull one that preceded her opening the program) was not only an expensively refurbished body in a laudably tasteful silver dress, but the relaunching of a brand.”

Adds Powers, “Accepting her kudos, she betrayed no happiness or even relief. She acted as if . . . she knew it was going to happen.

“I’m not saying the awards were rigged. Such accusations are ridiculous, irrelevant in fact, since when it comes to actual honors the VMAs are more satirical than serious. But amid the show’s usual weird juxtapositions (Kid Rock and Lil’ Wayne, why oh why?) and accidental joys (wasn’t it great when Tokio Hotel won for Best New Artist?), Britney’s triumph felt almost scheduled.

    “beauty pageant smile”

This is why so many people voted for Alyona Pisklova in beauty pageant competition in Russia some time ago.

  2. Jay Says:

Katy Perry smashed all kinds of records with her song I Kissed a Girl and didnt get anything? Really? Toyko Hotel? Really who the hell are they. The whole show sucked.
