RIAA MediaSentry on criminal charge?
p2pnet news view | RIAA News:- A Michigan student wants to see RIAA Private Eye MediaSentry prosecuted.
In a criminal case.
Quoting Recording Industry vs The People, “The ‘John Doe’ student identified so far only as ‘Case #162983070′ sent a letter to a state investigator,” says Egon Orion in The Inquirer, going on:
“In his letter, he complains that Media Sentry has and continues to investigate Michigan residents such as himself without a private investigator’s licence as required by state law.
“He notes that he is identified as a defendant in a federal lawsuit filed by an RIAA member company alleging copyright infringements by himself and six other Michigan residents, and that the plaintiff has filed evidence compiled by Media Sentry in applying to pursue discovery, that is, identify himself and other defendants by name, take their depositions, examine their personal computers and so on, in order to hail them into US District Court seeking damages.”
Orion goes into the details of the case, and then the zeros in on the nitty-gritty.
“He argues that Michigan’s laws were not established to protect the self-interests of private investigators but instead to protect Michigan residents who might employ or be subjects of investigations,” he says in the story.
“As a Michigan resident, I have been subjected to harassment, intimidation, and invasions of my personal privacy as a result of the ongoing and continuing unlicensed activities of Media Sentry,” states the student, asking the state investigator to, “refer information about Media Sentry’s apparent felonies to the state Attorney General’s Office or the local prosecutor”.
Said a p2pnet post yesterday, “The fur continues to fly in Michigan, in a number of proceedings involving MediaSentry`s unlicensed investigations.
“Banned in Massachusetts, it’s also now also in trouble in Michigan where the governor recently signed into legislation an expanded revision of the state`s professional investigator licensing act.”
In his submission on behalf of the student, “Had Media Sentry bothered to contact your office between May 22, 2006 and May 28, 2008 (before the new statute was passed into law) and inquired as to whether its computer forensics work in the investigation of Michigan residents on behalf of the recording industry was encompassed by your private investigation regulations, it would have received an affirmative response from your agency,” says lawyer K. Orlando Simon, continuing »»»
Despite its carelessness in conforming its actions to applicable state regulations, by February 22, 2008, when the DLEG sent out its warning letter to MediaSentry, it was clearly on notice that it needed to secure a license from your agency if it intended to continue this type of work.
Nevertheless, in my particular case, Media Sentry continued to operate, in an illegal and possibly criminal manner, in violation of these applicable regulations in its investigation of my activities and conduct as a Michigan resident while at the University of Michigan.
Definitely stay tuned.

Just goes to show that big, bad and corrupt Corporate America can be slowed down and eventually stopped, with enough perseverance.
I want to see MediaSentry burn and laugh at the Big 4 and their RIAA as they look on helplessly while their primary extortion weapon is neutralized under there noses, hehe.
New, fairer, business models and businesses can’t come soon enough.

They (the defendant) forgot fraud.
I wonder if Invasion of privacy laws, fraud, and harrasment outweigh copyright infringement – that may not even be proved.
Take em down, Strip thier license, and bar them from investigating in Michigan and notify other states of MediaSentry.
