Copyright? Copy what? Stephen Harper

p2pnet news view Politics | Freedom | P2P:- Listen to, watch and read the lamescream print and electronic media and you could be forgiven to thinking that’s all there is.

That’s certainly the way the owners of the corporate press corps would like it to be, but that’s the way it isn’t, as at least two leading Canadian politicians have recognized.

New Democrat digital culture spokesman Charlie Angus has net neutrality and copyright right at the top of his agenda, and Green Party leader Elizabeth May acknowledges P2P (people to people) Power helped in a major way to overturn the vested interests decision to bar her from the upcoming televised debates.

But Stephen Harper believes are only two elements of importance in the upcoming Canadian federal election.

Stephen Harper.

The World Wide Web? What’s that? Net Neutrality? Some quirky cyber thingy. Copyright? Easy. Every time you copy something, you pay one of a corporate entertainment and/or software companies. Right?

But apparently George W. Harper and his minions believe thatonly applies to others. Not to them.

“Dear Overzealous Web Designer in the Basement of the Conservative War Room,” says a post on blog.macleans.ca.

Hi! I know you’re probably busy dealing with the — uh, bandwidth issues that brought down DionBook (still readable - for now - via googlecache), but I just wanted to let you know about another potential headache-in-the-making over at notaleader.ca.

You know that line about how it’s better to seek forgiveness than ask permission? That’s actually not always the case — not when you’re talking about, say, copyright — which is something that you’d think the Conservatives would have learned by now.

Yet, on your create-your-own-ad flash thingy, there are all sorts of video snippets from various networks - CTV, CBC, TVO and possibly others - but I can’t find anywhere that it says that material is being used with permission.

In fact, there’s nothing to indicate where the footage came from at all - which is required if you were planning to use the ‘fair dealing’ exemption, although it’s hard to see how this qualifies as “criticism or review.”

Did you just forget to add that information? Did it get accidentally removed when you took down the puffin? Or are we heading towards another one of those copyright oopsies moments that seem to crop up with surprising frequency when y’all try to get down with your bad multimedia-user-content-generating selves?

Anyway, hope you’re having a fab Day Five! Can’t be worse than Day Three, right?

PS Say hi to The Ghost of Sir Charles Tupper for me!

So what’s it all about?

“This time it isn’t Bill C-61,” posts Michael Geist.

“Instead, the Conservatives website faces claims of copyright infringement and demands to take down content.”

(Thanks, Luvie)

Yes, and the very next day starts demanding that political bloggers remove a video of her calling Canadians “stupid” by threatening them with legal action:

excuse me but did she actually say that or was it a mde u pthing cause ill tel you to take it down
AND ill add the above user , is not telling the thruth and as is stated it is slanderous.
It is aiding and abetting a crime to do so.

    UPDATE:

As a result of threats of legal action by the Green Party of Canada against this blogsite, I have removed the video pending legal advice from my solicitor.

NOW heres the question for the blogger, why would a lawyer tell you to take it down unless you had not violated the law, and as no one can view the video, we can only surmise you tried to find a way to make those words appear.

Ive been taken odd time out of context as well, there is nothign like some noob trying to twist words for his 2 seocnds of lime light
BOOO hooo on bucky the dead dog.

    your irrelivant anyways.

  5. chronoss Says:

In the TVO clip, Elizabeth May clearly says “they” think Canadians
are stupid, referring to the opinions of some politicians. She then
turns to the questioner and agrees with HIS assessment that a carbon
tax is essential. No spin can change that.

IN OTHER words : shes saying that others( as in liberals and conservative politicians) think canadians are stupid and this noob turns it into a big deal.

Ya know honestly if the rest of us can’t see that , we are all stupid.
