EFF sues George W. Bush, Dick Cheney

p2pnet news view | Politics:- President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Cheney’s chief of staff David Addington, former Attorney General and White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales are among the defendants in an EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) lawsuit.

Also named are  the National Security Agency (NSA) and other government agencies.

The EFF says it lodged a case on behalf of AT&T customers, “to stop the illegal, unconstitutional, and ongoing dragnet surveillance of their communications and communications records.

“The lawsuit, Jewel v. NSA, is aimed at ending the NSA’s dragnet surveillance of millions of ordinary Americans and holding accountable the government officials who illegally authorized it, says the foundation, going on»»»

Evidence in the case includes undisputed documents provided by former AT&T telecommunications technician Mark Klein showing AT&T has routed copies of Internet traffic to a secret room in San Francisco controlled by the NSA. That same evidence is central to Hepting v. AT&T, a class-action lawsuit filed by EFF in 2006 to stop the telecom giant’s participation in the illegal surveillance program. Earlier this year, Congress passed a law attempting to derail that case by unconstitutionally granting immunity to AT&T and other companies that took part in the dragnet. Hepting v. AT&T is now stalled in federal court while EFF argues with the government over whether the immunity is constitutional and applies in that case — litigation that is likely to continue well into 2009.

As well as suing the government agencies involved in the domestic dragnet, the EFF is also targetting, “individuals responsible for creating, authorizing, and implementing the illegal program, including President Bush and vice president Cheney”.

“Demanding personal accountability from President Bush, Vice President Cheney and others responsible for the NSA’s dragnet surveillance of ordinary Americans’ communications is the best way to guarantee that such blatantly illegal spying will not be authorized in the future,” said EFF Legal Director Cindy Cohn.

“Our lawsuit today should sound a clear warning to future occupants of the White House: if you break the law and violate Americans’ privacy, there will be consequences.”

  1. Eric Says:

The last time Bush was involved in a lawsuit, the Secret Service wouldn’t let anyone through to serve the subpoena.

I will watch to see if this happens again.

No corporate media coverage = Bush can ignore the lawsuit.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

It’s been duck, run, cover, and stonewall for this administration. I suspect there is a lot that will have to be reversed to make the Constitution work again.

Seems I remember Cheney having to make a run for it to get out of France to prevent a subpoena being served him over war crimes. Had he been successfully served with it, the French law would have required Cheney to remain in country there until it had been resolved. Damn shame it didn’t get served. I feel sure Cheney as well as Bush will be hesitant to leave this country during their lifetimes after leaving office for fear of such happening again in the world. Tells you just what world opinion is of the little shrub and company. To be truthful, mine is no better in that opinion of just how low this group is.

  3. Bruce Says:

Sue the President and Vice President of the United States? Are you kidding me. They have executive privilige and cannot be sued. They are wasting their time.

  4. Thinker Says:

Even if the lawsuit ever gets to court, no judge will decide the case unbiased.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

…..how pathetic…that these two men are supposedly
    the leaders of our country.

  6. Reader's Write Says:

G.W. Bush will have to do everything in his power to help Mc Cain win this election or be prosecuted as the most corrupt american official ever brought to trial. When I say anything… Be vigilant ladys and gentlemen his slight of hand almost won him and his constiuants 750 billion.
