My cat invented to do just that way before all these anoying advertisers when she want attention!

She couch right on the keyboard! The only problem is that these advertisers are not cute.

There have been quite a few times where Ive gone to mytelus(dot)com which is my home page and every story is blocked by a brown box that says filtered and there is one box that is displaying and ad for some unfiltered beer. It lasts for 5 to 10 seconds. Its a creative ad but very annoying. I wouldnt buy there beer. I dont buy things that are annoying. From time to time I get those ads that come up over stories and the tyupical pop ups or pop unders.

One thing Ive noticed on some sites and especially myspace is that when a page is loading I tend to click on a certain opart that I want to go to but then all of a sudden what I want to click on moves up in the page and then I end up clicking on an ad my mistake.

Turn off Javascript and those ads will never display. There are at least three options for Firefox;

NoScript – Blocks Javascript on all pages except those you whitelist.

YesScript – Allows Javascript on all pages except those you blacklist.

JButon – Puts a button on the toobar that provides a dropdown menu to toggle Java and/or Javascript on/off manually.

^^ IMHO, it’s not so much that we’ve built an ad-dependent society. It’s more that we’re in a society where everything is purpose designed to become obsolete within a very short period of time so it can be replaced by ‘new’ product. And the only way the corporate community can get us to buy, buy, buy this crap is to ‘programme’ us with advertising.

But what’s really insidious is the way in which the advertisers and corporations are penetrating our schools to mind-rape our kids into becoming good little consumers.

Personally, I think the ones that open a separate browser window should be classified as an intrusion, as at that point, technically, we haven’t asked our browsers to request anything from that site beside the relevant page. (Those ones, I “right-click>close from the bar directly.)

The majority of the ones that slide directly in front of you would appear to be flash-/java-based and built right into the page. Sometimes refreshing the page does clear it, the rest of the time you’ve got only 2 choices – hit the “x” or “close” (after checking the bottom left of the status bar to make sure it’s not pointing to another site), or closing the site.

It’s a paradoxical trap we’ve all gotten ourselves into isn’t it?!
We have this wide-spread loathing for too much advertising, yet we’ve built a society that’s actually “dependent” on ad revenue. This means we get those that want to maximize ad revenue by completely saturate our world with ads, regardless of what most would deem “sensible”.

Those annoy me, too, because even if they have an “X” in the corner, you can’t trust it because it could be a trick (remember those “cancel” buttons that took you to a dodgy website anyway?) and because they’re layers, not windows, alt-F4 doesn’t work. At least for now, though, there seems to be a partial solution: hitting refresh (F5) usually clears those things.
