14-year-old faces jail for music uploads
p2pnet news view | Music:- Hong Kong customs officials have acted swiftly on behalf of China’s music industry.
They’ve arrested a 14-year-old boy suspected of placing 2,000 Chinese-language songs online, says the New Zealand Herald.
Currently free on bail, he’s accused of uploading, “mostly Cantopop songs, as pop songs performed in the southern Chinese Cantonese dialect are known, customs official Michael Kwan said in a phone interview,” says the story.
“Kwan, divisional commander of the Copyright Investigation Division, told a news conference that the boy had advertised free downloads in an internet discussion forum,’he stated, also pointing out customs officials had previously arrested two other teenagers suspected of similar “crimes”.
“Copyright infringements carry a maximum penalty of four years in jail and a fine of HK$50,000 ($9335) for every item violated,” observes the New Zealand Herald.

A worst case scenario is INNOCENT INFRINGEMENT. As I said in another post….
Irate Pirate Says “there is no excuse for ignorance”.
Wrong. There are many reasons (excuse is an ugly euphemism). Here are some:
- Mental illness
- Low IQ / Mental retardation
- Complicated laws
- Complicated jurisprudence
- Too many opinions as to the meaning of the law
- Wrong legal advise
- Too busy working to eat
- Too young
- Too inexperienced
- Born in a slum
- Alcoholic parents
- No money to get educated
…and so on.
I’m speaking of reasons. “Ignorance is no excuse” is an oxymoron because it is a perfect reason, regardless that many educated persons are biased against the lesser educated persons.
As for being a jackass, as are most judges that say that “ignorance is no excuse”, ignorance is no excuse.

If the kid is eventually prosecuted the criminals would be the acusers and the judge.
