Meet the GooPhone and Android
p2pnet news view | Mobiles:- Google and T-Mobile will, “converge on a stage in New York” to “unveil the first mobile phone powered by Google’s software,” as the New York Times told it yesterday.
Not only but also, the event would be a, “coming-out party of sorts for another, far more obscure, but no less ambitious company — HTC.”
The media frenzy isn’t anywhere near the level traditionally reserved for Apple product announcements, but it’s still impressive considering bottom line, it’s all about a phone.
Be that as it may, it’s the first, “boasting the Android software created by a Google-led consortium,” says BusinessWeek, going on:
“Like Apple’s music-playing handset, the G1 features a full Web browser and connects to the Internet with Wi-Fi technology. G1 similarly boasts a large touchscreen and lets users download games and tools from an online bazaar akin to the Apple App Store.”
Analysts, “predict that manufacturer HTC will sell 200,000 to 400,000 units this year, assuming the device becomes available in late October or early November and sells for $199 with a two-year contract,” says the story.
It isn’t the iPhone. But that may be enough in and of itself
GooPhone sales will, “also benefit from the flexibility of the Android Marketplace online app store,” observes BusinessWeek, adding:
“Unlike Apple’s iTunes App Store, Google’s marketplace won’t vet developers. Google will let anyone post applications to its store, where features will be rated in a YouTube-like manner. The openness of the Android software also can make it easier for developers to create associated tools more quickly.”
