Finns demand gun laws after school massacre

p2pnet news view | Crime:- “You will die next,” promises Matti Saari (bottom right), 22, who murdered 10 fellow catering students in western Finland, yesterday.

After making the chilling statement in a video which turned up on YouTube, he fires four shots almost directly at who ever is holding the camera.

It’s an almost a carbon copy of the murders which took place close to a year ago when another Finnish student, Pekka-Eric Auvinen, murdered eight people, and then killed himself.

He, too, used YouTube to talk the world.

Finnish interior minister Anne Holmlund says Finnish police spoke to the gunman the day before he carried out the attack, “because of a video he had posted on YouTube,” said Deutsche Welle.

However, the video showed up first not on the Google-owned site, but on a Finnish social networking page, says Times Online.

“The officer made his decision, he thought there was no reason to take the gun off him,” says the Dory, quoting spokesman Mintala Urpo. “The only video we saw was where he was shooting at the range,” he says. “It was only afterwards that much more information came out.”

Urpo wouldn’t say if the officer has been suspended.

Police are still looking for whoever videoed Saari, story states.

All but one of the victims were in an exam room and, “Police said that Saari set off petrol bombs after the shooting, leaving the bodies charred beyond recognition,” states the Times, adding

“The nine corpses - seven females and two males - have been taken to the capital, Helsinki, for analysis.

The other victim, a young woman, was shot in the corridor outside and is thought to have died at Tampere University Hospital, where Saari himself died of self-inflicted head wounds yesterday afternoon.”

Today, “Finns have heard it all before — authorities promising to tighten the laws on gun control,” says the BBC, continuing:

“They heard it last year, after an 18-year-old student went on a shooting spree in a Finnish high school.

“And they have been hearing it again since Maati Saari killed nine of his colleges and one teacher in a vocational school here in Kauhajoki.

“Finland’s prime minister has already called for tighter gun controls.”

  1. Rekrul Says:

Maybe they should pass laws declaring schools to be “gun-free” zones. That will really help, just like it’s helped prevent school shootings here in the US…

  2. Reader's Write Says:

When you ban guns only the bad guys will have them, why does this not fit between the ears of lots a folks
