The Net? Wha? Canadian politicians.

p2pnet news view Politics | P2P:- With Canada’s latest federal election looming, the country’s main political parties still haven’t figured it out, says a new poll.

The Net Can Make The Difference, as p2pnet has suggested repeatedly, but, “Canada’s political parties don’t give a Twitter about using new media to engage the country’s younger and increasingly wired voters,” says Marc Chalifoux, executive director of the Dominion Institute, which commissioned the poll.

A mere 9% of Canadians aged between 18 and 25 said a party had contacted them via e-mail, text message,  a social network site or Twitter during the first week of the federal election campaign, it says, according to the Globe and Mail.

“It’s a missed opportunity considering that 83 per cent of respondents had a Facebook profile, the majority had cellphones, and more used the Internet – 35 per cent – as their main source of information on the election than any other, including TV, newspapers, radio, family and friends,” says the story, observing cross the border, Barack Obama’s campaign is, “renowned for its reliance on the Internet and technology”.

Instead, they’re continuing to believe the traditional corporate print and electronic media are where it’s at.

In other poll findings, bloggers are more likely to vote than non bloggers, says the Globe and Mail.

However, not all Canadian federal politicians are in the dark about P2P People Power.

Twenty days ago,New Democrat  spokesman Charlie Angus went online tell people about his party’s stance on digital culture issues.

And Green Party leader Elizabeth May gave the Net the credit for helping her to win a place in the televised election debates.

As we posted on May’s succes, “This great pic from The Toronto Star’s Tim Krochak (right) says it all.”
