On the main streets in many major cities, it has offices dressed up as ‘churches’. It uses them to prey on people – particularly kids — as they walk by.
Well before I started p2pnet, as an investigative reporter, I studied Scientology in detail and I had a lot of trouble believing it was getting away with what it was getting away with.
Back then, there was no such thing as the Net. We relied on the mainstream corporate media for gathering and redistributing information, data and news and consequently, apart from shock-horror stories deliberately generated to make headlines, there was no meaningful, or cohesive, way of publicising the so-called ‘church’.
But that’s changed. Thanks to blogs and bloggers, IM, chat, and all the other uniquely cyberspace forms of communication, as well as mobile phones, the cult is now being held up in the glaring light of day. And it doesn’t like it. Not one little bit.
Smooth talking snake oil salesmen
With movie star Tom Cruise and other high-profile stars and celebrities touting it, on first blush, Scientology seems to be a reasonable facsimile of other religions which genuinely try to help people. And another famous actor, Will Smith, has also been associated with the cult.
He vehemently denies being a member, but Black Voice has him saying this:
“[…] in all of the experiences I’ve had with Tom and Scientology, like, 98 percent of the principles are identical to the principles of the Bible. The Bible says, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. And you know, there’s a Scientology principle: Do not create experiences for others that they cannot comfortably perceive.”
Maybe Smith isn’t Scientologist, but in this story at least, he doesn’t appear to have much of a problem with it.
Smith is an adult and he can believe what he likes. But by virtue of what he does for a living, his views can’t be held privately and given that the youth of the world look up to people such as him and Cruise, if they say, or even imply, something is cool, then It’s COOL!!!
I’m the father of a 12-year-old daughter and I know just how impressionable kids are, especially when they’re confronted by smooth talking snake oil salesmen.
L. Ron Hubbard Way
When I stopped making my living as a professional journalist, Scientology and Scientologists moved out of my sphere of interests. But my friend Maggie, a singer, song-writer and guitar player in the US, is passionately opposed to the cult and back when p2pnet first went online, she rekindled my own interest.
On Monday I posted a story on the mind-bending fact cult founder L. Ron Hubbard has a street named after him in Los Angeles. Hollywood. It figures. But what really blew my mind was Scientology has been getting the local council to close down the street every weekend.
Purpose? So Scientologists can stage (word used advisedly) events.
Sammi Franklin and Lisa Derrick are courageously trying to get something done about it, as LAlist points out, and we’re hoping for a few pix and maybe a report on a typical L. Ron Hubbard Way weekend.

My mom was a single parent and disillusioned with Christianity, as she understood it. She didn’t feel anyone was there to help her, but she persevered over adversity and became a professional and was able to raise all us kids.
We rarely say her with all the overtime she got, but we saw her at least more then we did when she joined Scientology. She meets my stepfather in their field of profession. He was persuasive and charming and in three months time, our lives where turned upside down. I would add more, but I have to be careful of the tell signs that would give me away.
I went from basically fatherless to an over dominating father figure who dictated or at least tried to dictate every aspect of our lives over night. My stepfather emulated LRH very well, and was a very intense letter-of-the-law Scientologist.
I took a few courses and even went to a Scientology school that no longer exists. I had certain disabilities, which the public schools systems had no programs at that time to help, so my mom thought Scientology could help me. Of course my problems were once again put on the back burner for the sake of clearing the world. You’re darn right I was mad. I would wait at that org, which doesn’t exist anymore because the county government kept raiding them, if I’m to understand right from my online studies.
I remember the raids, by the Sheriffs.
I waited to see my mom, I would wait for hours, just to spend a few minutes with her, and they even robbed me of that and said I could only see her if it was an emergency. It was like this all the time everyday. Scientology this and Scientology that, it gets real old.
I hated it most of the time and I was somewhat Christ curious still and I remember from Sunday school, not to worship any other Gods. I took issue in my youth with the fact that LRH was treated and revered like a god, it turned my stomach to see everyone stand up and clap at a picture of LRH on the wall. One time I tried to get in the spirit of it and join after being in this akward position for the hundredth time and I felt sick and got a headache and sat back down. The whole thing made me ill.
This was before I really knew a whole lot of LRH. This was many years ago. I have no lawsuit with Scientology. I did have in my possession the almost hundred thousand dollars worth of courses and auditing receipts when my mother died. I contemplated a lawsuit, but I was tired of the hate I felt and never felt I could prove my case, so I threw it away and decided it was time to forgive, yet I knew I could never forget. I needed to let go, because I’ve wasted too many years being angry over what happened to my mother and I and my family.
My stepfather, after he depleted all the equity in my mother’s house, which almost four times the original value, tried to kill my mother after he successfully disconnected her from her family. My mother was in a state of shock for months after that and she never returned to Scientology since then. I’ve read other stories like this. The men of Scientology sweet talking women out of their savings and leaving them.
Falsifying loan applications to get loans to give to Scientology, with Scientologists in the loan companies encouraging it and helping my stepfather accomplish this end. I could add more to this, but it might give me away. The man who tried to kill my mother may still be alive.
I have a family and I don’t want any harm to come to them. My mother got a disease through tainted blood. Her health was deteriorating rapidly after that. She already had 2 husbands who abandoned her and now this savior of a man who happens to be a Scientologist with all the answers through LRH. Blah. What a cruel trick. All my mother tried to do was help people. This is painful for me. She gave everything for Scientology, everything, and I suspect including her life, through a slow and painful death. According to LRH, it was because she blew the org.
How can one fully recover from something like this, without having trouble forgiving?
This was pre DM [admin note: DM stands for “David Miscavige”] too. I’m not at all surprised by the stories I read on the internet and other medias. I get angry all over again that these jerks get away with these human rights abuses still to this day. They are sinister and are brainwashed from the very beginning that they are the victims and have a right to act this way. They utilize the victim mentality and it is this that fuels the Cult of Scientology.
They find victims of abuse with victim mentalities and say, let’s be victims together and fight the world for making us victims and if you try to get away or you don’t do what we want, then you’re one of them and an SP, and we will defend ourselves against you and the world, because we are the victims of the world. Only to sadly be victimized again and again and used and abused by the very org that claimed it would CLEAR you. I find in my lifetime that Scientology is responsible for most of my supposed engrams in my youth. It is the Cult of Scientology who messed up my spiritual well being, because they showed me just how cruel the world and its people can be.
The Org was just like my sadly pathetic abusive alcoholic father. Yell and rant and rave and then claim to love you and that they only have your best interest at heart and this abuse goes on and on. It was just like going to my dad’s house on the weekends, just to see him beat the crap out of my stepmother.
I couldn’t escape the madness and I lost my faith in God after this, because after all, how could a God allow such horrible things to happen and such lunatic men, gain control over people’s lives. They act more like CIA and FBI in their auditing then clergy of the faith, so who are they kidding?
Do you know what happens to kids who grow up in abusive households? They suffer from PTSD, and Scientology is like growing up and being in an abusive family. The scars still linger, and after years and years of counseling, meds and prayer, I’m relatively sane from all of this, although I almost didn’t make it. I wanted to die, I tried to die, many times.
Now I want to live, and I want others to live.
I want people to know that being in scientology is like loving your captor. Like the abused wife keeps going back to the abusive husband. Like those abused kids that just want daddy to get well and just love them, like they promised.
I want to thank anonymous and their movement, Mark Bunker for staying on this and always having the passion to persevere with this tragic American tale. I want to thank you Jenna and all the other former and ex Scientologist kids for coming out and telling your stories and wanting also to help those that are still in this abusive family and prevent those who might be misled to join it.
I’m very upset with Youtube and Google for empowering this abusive cooperate greedy family, just because you are afraid of lawsuits and they are making money from Scientology. We know who your god is Google / Youtube.

What you describe is terrorism at its most insidious - terrorism from within, terrorism carried out against woman and children. A pox on them all and onto all who support them. There is parasitical businesses in our soiciety that need to be obliterated.
One of course is the major music industry represented by Vivendi/Universal, Sony ( No longer BMG) EMI and Time Warner all of them enemies of america and of the citizen of the world in general.
Fortunatly people noticed the danger and now these business are well on their way to extinction.
But this kind of parasites while the largest in size are not the most virulent.
Another one way smaller in comparaison but much more toxic is the business of scientology.
If the music industry was the flu the cult of scientology would be the Ebola Virus.
Fortunatly these parasites made the big mistake of attracting attention to themselve while trying to trample the freedom of speech of the internet comunity just like the RIAA did before them.
BIG MISTAKE!
They too are now doomed to extinction as a result as hundred of thousand of internet activists and bloggers are after them spreading the true.
Morality: if like the majors of the entairtainenement industry or the cult of scientology you have something to hide do not attract the attention on what you are doing to the internet comunity.
Any way with internet sooner or later someone is going to find out about business based on lies and deceptions and sooner or later they will be wiped out. But may be these business prefer “Later”.
Think about it. Even the totalitarian governement of China is not able to keep the citizen quiet on internet!

JON NEWTON, please be aware that by taking on Scientology, you may be endangering both yourself and your family. Witness BBC Panorama reporter John Sweeney in the recent documentary “Scientology and Me” and its followup reports (on both Bittorrent and Youtube) - who reported being investigated, followed everywhere, privacy violated, and more. If anyone is ever declared an enemy of scientology [SP or “fair game”] the cult will attempt to destroy them in every possible way, both legal and illegal. First they will hire private investigators to try to dig up dirt on the person. If that fails to work, they move on to more sinister means.
Virtually every person — including and especially reporters — who has stepped up to criticise Scientology has lived to regret it.
I only say this as a warning, not a threat. If you understand the risks and still want to pursue this, then good luck to you.

Here is something that may interest you. Somebody leaked a piece of a lecture in which L. Ron Hubbard details what he thought about the police. It is a very interesting listen! He accuses them of selling disaster on purpose and mentions how they can be used by Scientology. All in his own voice.

If no-one ever stands up against the likes of CoS, then a lot more is endangered than just families, in the long run…
I give a big thumbs up for both John Sweeney and Jon^^, lets hope more people join in the campaign to expose those persistent, wall-crawling, eh, CoS associates and the tragedies they’ve caused, and pushing towards making them accountable for those actions… (on second thought, calling them cxxxxxxxxxx would be just too disrespectful towards the little buggers…).
If more people keep reporting on and exposing CoS, and less people giving a blind eye whenever they try to enforce their mad doctrines, I think there’s definitely a light at the end of the tunnel. We just need a few more courageous people, thanks Jon^^…

You’ll hear about it in a few months.” The book “Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health” was the result.
A few hours ago I finished reading this book, and it has occured to me that the mild popularity this book has experienced is an excellent example of what happens when people have no knowledge of what science is and how science works.
If Dianetics is “the modern science,” God help us all!

It’s just awful what the Scientology organization does to children. It really makes me angry that they get away with this. Tricking adults is one thing, but kids are innocent, they deserve to have a childhood. Scientology forces them into a corner. It separates kids from their families and denies them a proper education. There are kids aged 13 working 80 to 100 hours a week in Scientology’s Sea Organization. They get recruited using lies and high pressure scare tactics, signing staff contracts often without parental consent. All so David Miscavige can buy another $5000 suit.

@Reader’s Write: that’s clearly not a threat, it’s a legitimate warning about the intimidation tactics that the cult employs. They most likely wouldn’t threaten him HERE, on a comment thread. The trolls will certainly get here eventually, like terryeo and the other famous trolls (how are your stats doing, guys? are they up? don’t get sent to RPF, I wouldn’t wish that even on you, unless perhaps it would wake you up to the realities of the horrors your little organization is capable of), but if they were going threaten him, they’d do it for real. Harassing phone calls, etc.
Keep spreading the word of the evils of this group! They cannot last if they are starved of new members that are ignorant of what they are in for.

How is it any different from every other religion? They all seek to indoctrinate and promote their ideologies. Though one could argue that christianity and islam are far worse. Just look through history at the things done in the name of god; crusades, hitler, suicide bombers etc. The papal state has been involved in some of the worst atrocities in the history of mankind. Any form of religion is inherently deleterious to it’s disciples and so called heathens / heretics.
I see no one criticising those religions. I detect hypocrisy.

I think that I remember you making this point before, under a different name.
Name any of these atrocities, and you’ll find a political or financial agenda behind it. While it was in the “name of God” (or allah, or athiesm, or whatever), there was always an agenda behind it.
Same with the cult. Most people in the cult geniunely believe they’re helping, but there’s a clear agenda behind the atrocities in the group.

The crusades, hitler, suicide bombers, etc. are very good examples of why any ‘church’, philosophy, or politician should be held accountable for their actions. A fast search of the news from the past few months shows the Church of Scientology involved in deadly coverups (blue asbestos on the Freewinds), infiltrating goverments and stealing classified documents (convicted in Belgium Sept 2007) Murder (Head of one of the orgs in France was convicted of purposely driving a man to suicide). Every religion I’ve ever seen has been subject to protest when they are caught harming their parishioners or the community it serves.
Right now we have a powerful and wealthy organization which teaches that two percent of the population should be disposed of ‘quietly and without sorrow.’ It considers it’s members to be a more evolved ‘master race’ (homo novis). Knowing that, I’m not surprised by the way this organization treats it’s neighbors.
I don’t understand an argument that mines the history books for other people’s crimes rather than dealing with the current problems. A murderer isn’t free from prosecution until they match a serial killer’s record. Fraud doesn’t become illegal only when it reaches Enron proportion. Crimes are not judged on a curve. The goal is to avoid the atrocities of history, not to recreate them. If the best defense of your actions that can be found is to compare yourself to Hitler, then you might want reconsider those actions.

If you replace Scientology with Hebrew what kind of propaganda would you get?
I read the first book of Ron Hubbard in 1983, then I went to a church of Scientology
and I continued to read Scientology books and follow courses when I wanted since that time.
I went to the church when I wanted and I left it when I wanted so all these accusations
against Scientology are not real! They are not real at all!
If one wants to buy a Scientology book or ten or fifty he has the right to do so!
And if he does not want to follow Scientology he could just don’t go there and
do something else!
One should follow Scientology because he likes to!
If he does not likethe data in the books he can study a different subject
and leave Scientology and Scientologists alone!
If someone writes “The cult of Scientology will be destroyed” I would like to remind him that
we are not in Germany 1935! The “time” is: 27 Sept 2008! The Nazi party has lost and

That cult has ruined peoples lives, framed them for crimes, extorted money, harrassed severely people critical of it, been found guilty of money laundering and tax evasion in various countries, gagged people from telling the truth or their experiences by malicious lawsuits and takedown notices, engaged in brainwashing it’s members and even others if ever given a chance, other things similar you name it, just take a look at the stories at xenu.dot.com (I recommend checking the story of Paulette Cooper) and those are just the tip of the iceberg…

You bring the oppression of Nazis up in your post as comparison and use it against anonymous, so I’ll have to counter it. You really want to know what CoS is and what it stands for? Then go to Wikipedia and look up “Hitler Youth”, replace all instances of that name with CoS, all organization and leader names with CoS equivalents, and you’ll have a pretty accurate article describing the cancer in our society called ‘Church of Scientology’… It would quite easily also pass as a type of ‘mafia’ organization; many of their antics are pretty much the same (look up on the net their ‘fair game policy’ used against those who attack CoS…)
I’d not call the anonymous ‘Nazis’, instead I’m inclined to call them the ‘resistance fighters’ in defense of freedom and truth, both online and offline, and if possible I’d give them a medal for that^^…
