L Ron Hubbard Way: a Scientology weekend

p2pnet news view Freedom | P2P:- Yeh, I know. I complain a lot about Google. But it does have its good points, Google Maps being one of them.

While I was killing hand-delivered spam, this morning, I noticed the Ex-Scientology kid post is still attracting comments.

It includes a write-up up from someone who had up-close-and-personal experiences with the cult as a child. But that wasn’t all.

“On Monday I posted a story on the mind-bending fact cult founder L. Ron Hubbard has a street named after him in Los Angeles,” I wrote, going on:

“Hollywood. It figures. But what really blew my mind was Scientology has been getting the local council to close down the street every weekend.

“Purpose? So Scientologists can stage (word used advisedly) events.

“Sammi Franklin and Lisa Derrick are courageously trying to get something done about it, as LAlist points out.”

Says Brandon in a Readers Write to our first post on the subject »»»

They are also using film permits to shut this street down! FilmLA has some quasi-governmental role in handing out permits to the COS’s ‘Golden Era’ studios. This should also be brought to the Council’s attention. It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that film permits and street closures are being used to keep protesters out.

I wondered what L Ron Hubbard Way actually looks like, and what they get up to, on these weekends.

But I’m far from being the first person to exhibit curiosity. Not long after the street officially came into being in the late 90s with a little help from movie star John Travolta and others, Xenu TV decided to check it out.

The result was Fourth Of July Weekend on L. Ron Hubbard Way in which the ’security’ drone on the  left warns a researcher the street is closed off.

More recently,   “Friday morning from 6am until Saturday night at 11pm for the past two years Samantha Franklin, along with her neighbors, have endured a nightmare of street and sidewalk closures for parties, complete with hostile security guards, stages, bright lighting and loud music, plus vendors crowding her residential street,” says Brandon Walsh’s September 21 San Francisco Bay Area Independent Media Center story.

Together with Lisa Derrick, Samantha has been trying to get LA City Council to do something about the cult’s regular hostile weekend occupation of what’s supposed to be a public street.

Construction for the events begins days in advance, starting sometimes before 7 am and going on past 10 pm at night, says the post, says Walsh in Residents Oppose Scientology’s Year-Round Weekend Closures of L. Ron Hubbard Way.

Loud teardowns occur during the same hours, he says, going on »»»

These residents who live on the east side of the street known as L. Ron Hubbard Way in the shadow of the big blue building known as Pacifica Base never receive notice of the closures, as required by the permitting process, nor have they ever been petitioned by the sponsoring organization, the Church of Scientology.

“Imagine being told you can’t drive to you garage that you pay rent for? Imagine not being able to get a pizza delivered. Or having friends be able to come over, and all the noise of set up tear down and the parties themselves.” says Franklin.

Often during these events residents must park in a private garage blocks away owned by Scientology. In order to get a pass to park there, the residents had to give not only their driver’s license numbers, but their Social Security numbers and be photographed.

One elderly resident had to carry her dying dog three blocks to her car because Scientology security guards would not allow her to drive on to the street. Another was told her guests would not be allowed to come to her birthday party. And every week there were graduations, special events, and celebrations held by Scientology.

Then came the final straw: Samantha had come home and parked in her garage before a Scientology party and woke up to find her driveway was blocked by a kiosk and the street full of party goers. So along with demanding changes, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

“I had seen Anonymous and knew about Project Chanology,” she explained referring to the branch of nameless internet denizens who humorously protest the abuses of Scientology wearing masks and costumes.

Sammi,as her friends call her, went to http://www.enturbulation.org, posted about living on LRH Way, and found a wealth of support, including people who helped her navigate through city council.

“I had written Councilmember Garcetti’s office, but until I went public on entubulation.org, I got no action. Anons contacted their councilpeople and things started happening.”

Through Anonymous, Sammi learned that a blanket motion had been put before the city council to close L. Ron Hubbard Way every weekend for a year. Previously, the Church had petitioned on a week-by-week basis. Sammiand Anonymous went into action. Anonymous compiled photos for her of street closures, including the large digitron TVs and speakers stacks that had blasted music in March and April and the stages tents andshipping containers that are part of what she calls, “L. Ron’s Big Top.”

“So I went to city council with a friend and we explained the unbearable hell the residents go through every week. It seems Mr. Garcetti had never been informed that there were people other than Scientologists living on LRH Way. But there are–and some have lived there for over thirty years, before the city allowed the name to be changed from Berendo to L. Ron Hubbard Way.”

The motion to close the street for 104 days of the year was continued, and will be reviewed Tuesday, September 23.

Street closure permits require petitions signed by residents. Since the Scientology-owned buildings on LRH Way are dormitory housing for Church workers, called the Sea Org, it is easy to obtain the necessary signatures without notifying the non-Scientologist residents who live in apartments and single family homes on the street.

According to city-issued permits, the events are supposed to be open to the general public, but security discourages passage. Additionally, the requirement of a twenty foot wide fire lane has be skirted at times, and the street is often blocked at both ends making it difficult for emergency vehicles to enter if necessary.

At press time Scientology officials have told Sammi that they have withdrawn their request for a year of weekend closures.

The residents would like that in writing and the number of days the street is allowed to be closed severely limited, with the resolution of the matter entered into council records.

Stay tuned.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

One has to ask what monies or political favors Council member Garcetti’s office received to allow this to happen.

  2. Larry Lou Says:

It is sad that a the cult of applied science-fiction has this level of power.

  3. David Miscavige's Worst Nightmare Says:

It’s a bloody outrage. LA needs to change that street’s name BACK to what it was before, Berenda Street, and the Scilons should not be allowed EVER to block it!

  4. Freedom to think Says:

This is SO disgusting. The cult thinks it’s needs are more important than the needs of ordinary people-but then, they believe themselves to be ‘Homo Novis’,more advanced than ordinary people,(who they call ‘wogs’!)
What could be more important than ‘clearing the planet’ (ie getting more people into Scientology, getting more free slave labour to build your empire,or more hard cash from those trusting enough to believe they are doing a good thing)
This is typical totalitarian behaviour from this cult. Can you imagine living in a world where Scientology had a serious foothold? It would be hell on earth for most people.
The ONLY time they express concern about other people is when it becomes a media flap, and they send their PR people out to tell the usual lies and to try and save face.
There is no way there should be a street named after L Ron Hubbard, who was a mysogynist racist homophobe who wrote lies and turned it into a ‘religion’ to make a fast buck.

  5. Terryeo Says:

With appropriate permits in place and with a large volunteer labor force, the street was resurfaced in brick by Scientologists. By mutual and unanimous agreement of all the street’s property owners, on-street parking was prohibited. The owner of the greatest portion of the street’s length cleans the street every morning. It is one of the nicest streets in the Los Angeles area. Scientology has been throwing what you might call parties on the street for years (with permits), complete with music and refreshments as a weekly graduation celebration.

  6. Simple Wog Says:

Terryeo said: “With appropriate permits in place and with a large volunteer labor force, the street was resurfaced in brick by Scientologists.” (RPF volunteer labor = religious punitive enslavement)

….and that makes it Holy Ground?

Fixing up a public street for for your private use does not make it YOUR street. Complete with Gestapo papers required for residents to go home.

So Homo Novis, by social and ecclesiastical right, should be able to claim a public street as their own under illegal permits that violate local ordnance?

Most Chirches would allow the public to attend their proud moments; with the CoS, those moments are not what most would consider proud.

  7. Frank Drebin Says:

The permits were NOT appropriate, obviously many residents were unhappy with what was going on there, and were kept out of the loop. Sorry NO ONE including Scientology has the right to close down the public street like that. Why are people so afraid to speak up, why are they scared? “Unanimous agreement”, yea right. If you believe that I have a bridge to total freedom I would like to sell you. Is the reason because of the scam of Scientology will “fair game” them if they try to fight? I think so. Nice try Terryeo trying to spin this one. You FAIL again.

  8. randomx Says:

    Scientology is falling apart.
    Just google the word Scientology.
Or do a search for it on www.youtube.com/

  9. Anonymous Says:

Why would any city council allow any corporation to shut down a residential street? Did they really think this street was scientology’s own little Truman Show? Why did they let this happen? Why are the residents afraid and why do they have to give this cult their SS#’s just to park?

  10. Brenda Says:

This is awful! These people are being held as prisoners in their own homes and being tortured with loud noises just for having the misfortune of this cult being their neighbors! Mister Rogers would have never stood for this nonsense!

It sounds like the permits are being abused. Not only in their frequency of being issued, but also in closing public access when the permit says the event is open to the general public.

The City Council needs to put a stop to this and allow the residents of this area to have a bit of peace for change. I’d like to see them not allow a permit for 3 months, and then 1 permit for 1 weekend per month maximum which makes stipulations that the residents in the area have complete right of way to access their properties on foot or with their vehicles. Nobody’s driveway access should ever be blocked!

I’m glad these 2 women were brave enough to stand up for their rights and the rights of all of the private citizens living in that area.

    Dear Worst Nightmare

Every city should dedicate at least one street to L Ron Hubbard.

He was the greatest man in human history!

Even if that happened (over my dead body) they still want the whole GahLAXy.

Jon: Your getting lots of Stumbles and Diggs. That might account for the ongoing comments :)

  13. Fredric L. Rice Says:

Violently insane Scientology criminals. Amazing. Hubbard was a drug addled conman who launched “Operation Snow White,” the single most largest and widespread act of domestic espionage against the United States in our nation’s history. And the insane crime syndicate manages to get a street named after the felon — a criminal who ran and hid from Federal law enforcement officers until he died screaming about “Body Thetans” — invisible murdered space aliens infesting him.

The conman is dead by the crime syndicate lives on.

  14. Silly Ratfaced Git Says:

“He was the greatest man in human history!”

    Balderdash!

If that was intended as a joke, it worked. I laughed.

As the greatest man in human history, LRH wouldn’t make the top 10,000 list.

The greatest con-man in human history, perhaps. He’s at least in the top 100 on that list.

Note to non-scientologists. Scientology requires that its members run a customized version of netnanny (or equivalent) filtering software. Apparently the members are not informed about the functionality of this filtering software, they are just told that it will ‘improve’ their internet connection. Tory Christman describes this at xenu.net and other places. Most scienos are thus prevented from reading the info that is available at xenu.net (which is also clambake.org) and other scientology truth sites. Hence telling them to read xenu.net is not helpful since they probably can’t, even if they wanted to. scilons tend to avoid enturbulating facts in any case. LRH wrote that anyone criticizing the CoS was a thetan with heinous criminal acts on their time-line (perhaps in a past life) and was thus afraid of the CoS since it has the power to reveal their criminality. This is what leads to the asinine “What is your crime?” nonsense from the brainwashed scilons. This notion automatically relegates all CoS critics to a status of untrustworthy liar. Scilons just aren’t allowed to recognize the truth even when it hits them over the head. Anything in disagreement with source is simply ignored. And yet their internet connections are filtered.

There are a few OSA operatives who are allowed unfettered access to the internet in order to engage in misinformation and disinformation campaigns as we see here on p2pnet. Some of these operatives are relatively good at psy-ops, although their techniques appear to be stuck in the ’50s and ’60s (which is when LRH wrote up the processes). Tory Christman used to be one of those operatives, her story is fascinating reading and is available at xenu.net. Note that her experiences at alt.religion.scientology is what ultimately led to her leaving the CoS. She describes it as waking up one day and realizing that she was in a kind of ‘Truman Show’. The ‘false facts’ of the CoS just didn’t match reality. Keeping the real facts about the CoS on the internet is important. I am very unhappy that the CoS has succeeded in shutting down Enturbulation.org.

Rondroids are pretty predictable. They seldom deviate from their programming. Incapability of independent, critical thought is not what I would have thought would be a criterion for a ‘master race’. Unless your definition of ‘master race’ is a collection of mindless drones that believe and do exactly as they are told. A blind faith in the frankly nutty writings of a mediocre (IMO) science fiction author is hardly the basis for a serious religion. YMMV.

  15. anonymouse Says:

I Can’t Believe How Stupid People Are To Put Up With This Shit.
Scientologists view themselves as “Homo Novis” I view them as just “HOMO”

If I Lived on that street, I would walk, drive or do whatever I wanted, Whenever I wanted.
There just lucky I don’t live on that street.

It Sickens me, that I have to read how people Back down and cower from a bunch of freaks like that.

Maybe It’s Time For A Revolution in this country.
A Revolution from all this Stupidity.
maybe go beat up a few scientologist faggots.
burn there “HOMO novis” bodies to the ground.

  16. Rekrul Says:

“A blind faith in the frankly nutty writings of a mediocre (IMO) science fiction author is hardly the basis for a serious religion. YMMV.”

Yes, LRH was “mediocre” only in your opinion. Im my opinion, he sucked. :)

  17. Steph B Says:

I from here on in propose that I start a church/cult in honor of the worlds ONLY greatest science fiction writer, I will call this church the Church of Adamsisms, we will gather in front of my house every weekend for big parties of punch and pie, and you can all give me your money, (to cover the “costs” of punch an pie of course) also you must buy cups of tea and schematics to build your own Improbability Generator which will cleanse you of all your ills. Feel free to contact me with your “donations”

  18. John NYC Says:

Scientology is a real religion and it is very well justified in closing any public streets it deems proper on account of its religious concerns.

People just don’t get that they are not important when compared to a corporation that is considered a religion by the IRS and by itself.

  19. John NYC Says:

Terreo: “With appropriate permits in place and with a large volunteer labor force, the street was resurfaced in brick by Scientologists. ”

WTF???? There is not a single brick in ANY of the photos– it is all asphault, and all obviously not done by the COS. Why is it every time a scientologist says anything, it is a lie?

  20. Suzy Says:

Scientology is just shuttting the street down to prevent protesters from using it. They are violating the protester’s rights. They can have their graduations for their brainwashed members on their own property, they don’t need to use public property. And who does weekly graduations anyway. It’s all a scheme to shelter their members from the truth.

  21. Anon Says:

Scienology fail to understand that they can’t shove people around any more, what a day it will be when they do

  22. Anonymous Says:

Scientology fails to understand, and continues to attempt bad, bad things.
