Apple sells unlocked 3G iPhones
p2pnet news view | Mobiles:- Apple, recently forced to recall all of its 3G power adapters, is apparently now peddling unlocked 3G iPhones.
But only in Hong Kong.
That’s what The Inquirer says, going on “Lucky” Hong Kong residents are amongst the first to be offered “legal, Apple-sanctioned, unlocked Iphones compatible with any mobile operator”.
Now, “Apple’s local website is offering the 8 gigabyte version of its unlocked Iphone for $695 (£377) and the 16 gigabyte one for $798 (£433) letting buyers choose their own GSM service provider,” says the story.
Not only but also, Apple says it’ll even deliver the phone free to anyone inside Hong Kong.
Why?
Who knows?
Is this a sign of things to come?
Who knows?
(And, frankly, who cares?

There was an earlier p2pnet comment that Apple struggled to find an operator in Russia given that in Russia, there is no “phone-tied-to-operator” business model.
It is a sign that they could find an exclusive provider in Russia, but could not do so in Hong Kong.
