Plagiarism accusation hits Stephen Harper

p2pnet news view | Politics:- With Canada’s snap election only two weeks away, Conservative leader Stephen Harper has received another serious blow to his credibility.

He’s in charge of a minority government which must do more than merely win: it needs 28 more seats to gain complete control.

But an important 2003 parliamentary speech Harper delivered in 2003 on the Iraq invasion was in parts a word-for-word copy of a speech delivered only days earlier by former Australian prime minister John Howard.

The news was revealed by Liberal foreign affairs critic Bob Rae.

“Owen Lippert, a Conservative war room strategist, abruptly resigned yesterday afternoon, three hours after a senior Harper strategist, in a conference call with dozens of journalists about the matter, branded the issue a desperate attempt by the Liberals to deflect attention from a sagging campaign,” says the Canwest News Service.

Ironically Lippert, now an ex-member of Harper’s staff, having resigned, specialises in intellectual property law and he author of Competitive strategies for the protection of intellectual property.

Do you think every speech Harper ever made will now be under intense online scrutiny?

Meanwhile, not surprisingly, “The plagiarism allegation made front-page news in Australia on Wednesday after being picked up on CNN in the United States,” says the story.

Definitely stay tuned.
