Ted Stevens corruption trial
p2pnet news view | Politics:- Alaska senator Ted ‘Net Tubes’ Stevens can be heard discussing how a “cozy arrangement” he had with VECO Corp boss Bill Allen, “a longtime friend and benefactor,” might, “pile up legal bills and land them in jail”.
So says the Associated Press.
Stevens is infamous as the man in charge of America’s Commerce Committee and, “one of Washington’s leading players on technology policy,” who once described the Net as a “series of tubes“. Also, “one company now you can sign up and you can get a movie delivered to you daily by subscription, by delivery service. And currently it comes to your house, it gets put in the mail box when you get home and you change your order,” he said. “But you pay for that. Right?
“This service is not going to go through the internet and what you do is you just go to a place on the internet and you order your movie and guess what? You can order ten of ‘em delivered to you! And the delivery charge is free. Right?”
Almost exactly a year ago FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents searched Stevens’ home, “amid a corruption probe that has already snared two oil-company executives and a state lobbyist,” said CNN.
He was subsequently indicted on charges that he lied about accepting gifts from an oil contractor to become the first sitting US senator to face federal indictment since 1993,
Now it’s alleged Stevens, “knew he was wrong when he didn’t report more than $250,000 in gifts” and, “they say they have incriminating audiotapes to prove it”.
Prosecutors hope the tapes will, “back up testimony earlier this week by Allen that he never billed Stevens for work by VECO employees that helped turn a modest A-frame into a two-story home with a garage, sauna, wine cellar and wraparound porches,” says AP, going on:
“Allen told the jury he didn’t want his fishing and drinking buddy to pay ‘because I liked him’.”
Stevens, who endorsed John McCain running mate Sarah Palin, is charged with lying on Senate financial disclosure forms about more than $250,000 in work done on his hillside cabin and other gifts he received from VECO, an Alaska oil pipeline contractor, adds the story.
