As Villeneuve points out, it's important to remember that the issues highlighted in the Information Warfare Monitor / ONI Asia report affect only the TOM-Skype software distributed in China, and not standard versions of Skype. Skype-to-Skype communications are, and always have been, completely secure and private.

Josh Silverman, Skype's President, has <a href="http://share.skype.com/sites/en/2008/10/skype_president_addresses_chin.html" title="Skype President Addresses Chinese Privacy Breach - Skype Blogs" rel="nofollow">blogged about the situation</a>, explaining where we stand and what we're doing to sort things out.

China is a playground for American companies, because censorship that we have now in China is coming to your country. So, governments are interested that private companies do these experiments in China before a more-robust form of censorship is implemented in America.

Also, next billion of Internet users is coming from countries like China, so, the number of censored users will outweigh the number of non-censored users of the Internet for the first time.

The today's Internet is built by commercial telecom companies, and they do not keep those who threaten it off the network. This is why Internet is infested with the likes of RIAA, MPAA, Bay TSP, Mediasentry and Mediadefender.

Time to innovate elsewhere and build something new.
