Did Stephane Dion plagiarise a CanWest article?

p2pnet news view | P2P | Politics:- The Liberals (and everyone else) had a field day when their foreign affairs critic Bob Rae broke the news that an important policy speech delivered by Stephen Harper on the Iraq war wasn’t his policy, but Australia’s.

He — or, rather Conservative war room strategist Owen Lippert — ripped a statement of word-for-word from then Australian prime minister John Howard.

Now it’s the Liberals’ turn to take it in the shorts.

Did Stephane Dion “borrow” from an article written by Charles Mandel for Canwest on March 7? - wonders Stephen Taylor on his blog.

You be the judge, he suggests, quoting the two items below »»»

From an article written by Charles Mandel on March 7th, 2008:

In a major forthcoming report on Canada’s changing climate, scientists warn of everything from increased severe storm activity in Atlantic Canada to hotter summers and poorer air quality in urban Ontario. British Columbia may face retreating glaciers and snow loss on its mountains, causing potential water shortages. The Prairie provinces will continue to struggle with drought, impacting agriculture rurally and potentially causing water rationing in urban areas.

On March 14th, 2008, Stephane Dion gave a speech on climate change which included the following paragraph:

In a new report released quietly last week by the federal Department of Natural Resources, 145 leading Canadian scientists warned that Canada’s changing climate will lead to everything from increased severe storms in Atlantic Canada to drought in the Prairies. British Columbia may face retreating glaciers and snow loss on its mountains, causing potential water shortages. There will be hotter summers and poorer air quality in urban Ontario. And the Prairies will continue to struggle with drought, affecting agriculture and potentially causing water rationing in urban areas.

The emphasis is ours in both instances.

Innnnnnnterestinkkk.

Stay tuned.

b+ not plagiarism he paraphrased and mentioned it was from a news report as opposed to harper who borrowed word for word verbatim. CON$ervative War Room Failure yet again.

Yup. Parts are word for word and no mentin of Charles Mandel.

  4. Jon Says:

Nor does it say it was from a news report.

    Cheers!

Charles mandel used a ministry report why should a leader quote a news reporter on an issue that was an official govt document. His tax dollars paid for it. It could have been worse, harper used an entire call to arms speech for a war in an innocent country with no weapons of mass deception. Last time I checked people arent being murdered daily for climate change.

“Charles mandel used a ministry report why should a leader quote a news reporter on an issue that was an official govt document.”

So he did not only plagiarise he also violated Mr Mandel’s or CanWest’s copyright. Right?

    we rest our case ;)

  7. Reader's Write Says:

you rest your case? sad you didn’t even read the quote.

IF I paraphrase an official govt document while mentioning it was from a govt document am i plagiarist?

  8. kchan Says:

Paraphrased. Beside it would make poor graphics, and sound bits. When Bob Rae show the clip of the 2 speeches side by side it was kind of funny. What will Harper show? Dion Karaoke the CanWest article? Wait it would be kind of funny. Like a Disney sing along DVD…:)

When it is copied from one source - it’s called “plagiarism”.

When it’s copied from multiple sources - it’s called “research”.
