Bloody Globemedia pop-up adverts!
p2pnet news view | Advertising:- Bloody advertisers!
We were researching for a Canadian election story featuring NDP leader Jack Layton and CTV anchor Lloyd Robinson, so naturally, we surfed over to the CTV site.
And a truly gigantic Shaw digital TV ad popped up, totally obscuring the item.
As we’ve posted before, there are so many products with so little to distinguish one from the other advertisers are resorting to all kinds of skulduggery (can you say Deep Packet Inspection?) to capture our attention and online, it’s getting really silly.
Well, say the advertisers, ‘We have to do something, don’t we?! And the ads don’t last for long!’
This one lasted long enough for us to fire up a clipping application and snap a screenshot, damnit!
The trouble is, when one company comes up with what it thinks is great idea to club you over the head, it isn’t long before all the other advertising lemmings are following suit.
“I coined a new word this morning,” I wrote only last month.
“It’s used for MYLWYWTON (Made You Look Whether You Want To Or Not) advertisements,” I said, “you know, when you’re trying to read an online story and a phkingh (another new word used to suggest anger) ad is plastered right over it, adscuring it.”
I went on »»»
Online advertising has become so pervasive that advertisers know the only way they’re going to get you to pay attention is to virtually hit you over the head with a sledgehammer — enter sledgehammer advertising.
Was it Apple that started the trend of showing advertising movies next to copy? I don’t know but it turned what started out as clever Microsoft-knocking ads into a pain in the gluteus maximus. And other companies are doing the same.
And it’s not going to get better: it’s going to get worse.

Canwest Global doesn’t own CTV. The title should read ‘Bloody Bell Globemedia pop-up adverts!’.

THOU SHALL USE mozilla as browser and noscript add-on to take control of your web content
furthermore these are preferred:
linux [in order; simply mepis, ubuntu, debian, slackware free bsd], best available firewall and same for antivirus
linux = over 12,000 FREE appz, if u can’t find it there it doesn’t exist
if you use winblows u’re a sucker for being ready to get hacked, your shelf life is 3 months at most
Enjoy

Firefox with NoScript and Adblock Plus makes for a great combo. Pages look so normal it’s hard to believe anything is being blocked. If you tried them a long time ago and found they caused rendering problems, it is time to try them out again. I know I’m glad I didn’t give up. I don’t think I’d be able to live without them these days.
