Stephen Harper’s mum, the financial adviser
p2pnet news view | P2P | Politics:- “Many Canadians have seen big losses in their portfolio in last couple of weeks, I know that because my mother is one of those people and I hear about it every single day.”
So says Stephen Joseph Harper as per print and electronic media across the nation.
Is Canada merely on the verge of an economic crisis, or will it be a total, hard-core economic collapse?
Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper’s mother certainly appears to be seriously worried — worried about her shares and the stock market, anyway.
According to the Times Colonist here on Vancouver Island, Steve’s mum is phoning him, “with regular updates on the market — which presumably include no-nonsense, motherly instructions to do something about it”.
And if she’s, “freaking out about her RRSP,” this must be serious, says the story, going on:
“Harper’s revelation yesterday that his mother is worried to the point of calling him at work also prompts a certain amount of respect for his ability to handle stress. It’s one thing to have 33 million citizens counting on you to do the right thing while four opposition party leaders snipe at you.
“It’s another to have your mom on your case.”
The story has Harper saying, “I use my mom as an example, because she’s the person closest to me who’s most worried about the stock market these days.”
“Defending himself from criticism he doesn’t understand the market, Harper joked: ‘Believe me, I get quicker updates from her on the stock market than I do from the Department of Finance’.”
But was he joking?

He didn’t listen to her she told him not to lie and make promises he could not keep.
Why would he listen to her now?

Funnily enough it was this story which got me going to write my contribution to Jon’s politics fest (see Stephen Harper: little man…)
When I read this story the thing I asked myself was: does Mrs Harper bleet to her son about her investments in Canada Saving Bonds (the financial instuments of The Truth North) or is she worried because, like so many other people, she holds a portfolio featuring a wide array of goodies from around the world, including some sexier but riskier things which are now melting away with the financial crisis.
And what is Harper fils telling her? Is it: “Didn’t I counsel you Mom to keep a steady course like me and keep your investments in safe CSBs? They may not give you that much of a profit margin but they’ll always be there.”
Bloody likely.
