Globe and Mail ‘unenthusiastically’ endorses Harper

p2pnet news view | P2P | Politics:- Canada’s second-largest newspaper, the Globe and Mail, has, “unenthusiastically endorsed Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Canada’s Oct 14 general election”.

The ‘editorial board, “began the endorsement with a list of what it says are Harper’s two most worrisome personality traits: that he is a right-wing ideologue and that he is possessed of a mean-spirited and controlling nature,” says Reuters, almost paraphrasing a similar remark expressed in Britain’s The Economist, which says he, “comes over as a bloodless control freak”.

But, “despite these personality traits, Mr. Harper has governed moderately and competently for nearly three years,” the newspaper said. “He has not taken the country in dangerous new directions or significantly eroded the capacity of the government to act.”

The Globe and Mail said Liberal leader Stephane Dion, is a “man of great integrity and tremendous courage” but is not up to the task of leading the country, says the story.

It’ll be interesting to find out what the Toronto Star has to say.

yup… “Globe Media” has no special interest in Harpers Americanization of Canada.

    Unh-hunh

    True North…. free… unh-hunh

  2. Reader's Write Says:

the only reason he hasn’t taken canada into a dangerous direction is because he doesn’t have a majority. His bid for a war in iraq failed Hit attempt at criminalizing the small possession of a single pot plant failed, his bill to oust vitamins and natural remedies failed. I guess the globe forgot to mention that.

at least they admit their shortcomings in endorsing harper.

  3. Liz Newton Says:

First of all I agree with the post above that Harper, as the leader of a minority government, did not have much room to veer from a mid course. And given the Golb and Nail’s assessment of him as a right-wing ideologue that may have been just as well.

It is my belief that with the current acute economic debacle and a looming environmental crisis we are in need of someone who comes accross as more than just a competent manager.

Finally, our country is one which doesn’t generally feature much in international headlines, we are a steady, moderate society. That’s why it was particularly shameful to read in recent years how much of the rest of the world derided Canada for it’s role in scuppering various global environmental initiatives.

We have to give someone else a chance to lead the country.
