Ralph Nader contributes to Canadian election
p2pnet news view | P2P | Politics:- One could say American documentary maker Michael Moore had a good excuse to be in Canada filming our elections.
After all, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives invited him to Sault Ste Marie in northern Ontario, only a boat ride away from Michigan, from whence Moore hails.
But it turned into a total cock-up with the Conservatives later accusing Moore of violating the Canada Elections Act.
Tory candidate, Cameron Ross, apparently got cold feet and Moore ended up following the NDP’s Tony Martin around instead.
But what has US presidential candidate Ralph Nader (right) got to do with the price of Canadian eggs?
Not a lot, says Green Party leader Elizabeth May.
Famous consumer advocate and former leader of the American Green Party Nader, issued a statement, “praising the central plank of the Canadian Liberal and Green parties,” says the Globe and Mail, going on »»»
“This Canadian election is an example of how smaller third parties can influence the debate, with the Green Party’s carbon tax being adopted by the Liberal Party as Exhibit A,” said Mr. Nader in a statement provided to The Globe and Mail. “For Canadians who believe in a carbon tax, which is essential in any battle against global warming, you have two choices this election to vote for something you believe in.
OK. But what has that to do with Nader?
“There is a real chance for a progressive breakthrough on October 14, which would help comparative movements in the U.S.,” he says in the statement.
Ah SO!
But, “I think it’s extraordinary that Ralph Nader would comment on our election,” the Globe and Mail has May saying. “I won’t comment on the U.S. election.”
However, “Throughout the Canadian campaign, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May has made several references to Mr. Nader, particularly when defending her position that Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion would make a better Prime Minister than Conservative Leader Stephen Harper,” says the story, adding:
“Ms. May has said she does not want to repeat what Mr. Nader did in the 2000 election, when he argued there was no difference between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore. Because the final results of that election were so close, many in the United States believe Mr. Nader’s candidacy cost the Democrats the 2000 election.”
Not only but also, according to the story, earlier in the campaign, Liberal candidate Bob Rae stated:
“We’ve got the Nader twins at work here. Elizabeth May and Jack, they’re both urging people to vote for them.
“The net effect of that is going to be to end up electing Mr. Harper.”
Meanwhile, we’re into the final hours of the election to decide who’s going to be in charge of Canada’s 40th parliament.
You know what to do.
Get out there and VOTE NDP!

Classic denial. Rae should be happy, there’s going to be a job opening at the next Liberal leadership review.
