P2P Power: slashing the need for servers

p2pnet news view | P2P:- BitTorrent is cast in the role of P2P file sharing villain. But that’s only the jaundiced view of the venal corporate movie and music cartels.
In reality, P2P represents the distribution system of the 21st Digital century and a new product based on BitTorrent could, if projections are correct, mean almost unimaginable savings for companies running large networks.
Holland’s 4M88 company claims its DistriBrute is the world’s first P2P desktop deployment product especially developed for business use.
“Using the P2P protocol DistriBrute can perform at previously unreached speeds, eliminating the need for decentralized distribution servers,” promises the company, going on:
“DistriBrute provides you with a centralized, efficient, stable deployment environment that maximizes the capabilities of your current infrastructure.
“DistriBrute is an add-on to a current desktop management system, but can also be deployed as a standalone product. It distributes a Windows operating system, drivers and applications in an extremely effective and efficient manner.”
Looks good, but is it a real?
TorrentFreak’s Ernesto believes it is.
“Thus far, it had two successful test runs at large educational institutions in The Netherlands, and the initial results are promising,” it says, going on:
“At INHOLLAND, a concept version of DistriBrute is now used to send software to 6,500 desktop computers across 16 different locations. It thereby eliminates 20 servers that were used before to distribute 25.6 TBs of data across the network. Even more so, the P2P based solution speeded up this process significantly, from 4 days to only 4 hours.
“The cost savings for those who use DistriBrute are immense. Leo Blom, co-founder of 4M88 told TorrentFreak that they were able to cut 50 servers at ROCMN, another Dutch educational institution.”
Energy-saving benefits can also be added to the equation.

Availability is for the moment limited to The Netherlands, but DistriBrute will be released internationally in the first quarter of next year.

Dare I say this is a positive effect of the RIAA criminalizing Napster? They have pushed ad-hoc P2P networking so far into the mainstream that it is becoming a market unto itself. One can actually hear the dollars flowing out of record companies and into P2P ventures.
