Loudeye buys Gabriel’s OD2
p2pnet.net News:- America’s Loudeye has bought OD2 (On Demand Distribution), the UK-based Peter Gabriel / Microsoft music download company.
The acquisiton cost Loudeye some US$39 million in cash and stock, it says in a press statement.
Loudeye (you have to love the name : ) recently bought p2p ‘piracy protection’ firm Overpeer, which means it has an in-house scalp-hunter with which to try to chase people it suspects of trifling with its ‘product’.
OD2 co-founder and ceo Charles Grimsdale will become the president and managing director of the combined company’s international business operations, effective immediately and the senior executive team will also be staying on – for the time being, at least.
OD2, firmly entrenched throughout Europe as the primary corporate music presence, recently revealed its SonicSelector digital music jukebox – the first ‘pay-as-you-go’ model under which users can stream tracks for a penny each.
OD2’s nearest competitor in the virtually non-existent corporate music market is Apple’s iTunes, which is now a presence in Europe.
