Wet WiFi – War Kayaking

p2pnet.net News:- War kayaking.

Kind of sends a shiver down your spine, don’t it? (And think of it the possibilities ; )

Phillip Torrone did. So he went for a self-propelled cruise on Lake Union in Seattle, Washington, not that far from p2pnet’s home base on Vancouver Island in Canada. Kayaking country.

“Of course, we couldn’t help but bring along a lot of equipment and decided we’d hunt for open wireless spots,” says Torrone on engadget here.

And he “found a ton, charted it with GPS, Wifi finders …”

That’s all you get for now. Torrone promises to explain how the feat was managed on Tuesday’s engadget HOW-TO. In the meanwhile, below what you’ll need to get rolling. Sorry. Paddling.

  • Pocket PC 2215 + Symbol Wireless card
  • Sony Ericsson p900 phone
  • Garmin Forerunner GPS watch
  • Sony t1 5 Megapixel camera
  • Motorola i730 phone
  • One energy bar
  • One bottle of water (16 ounces)

All the gear was placed in plastic bags and sealed.

“One more thing,” says Torrone. “Before we left we installed ‘WifiFoFum’ a wireless tool for the Pocket PC which gives a pretty good radar-like display of Wifi spots and also saves the log. It?s small, fast, free and works great. It also reminds us of those ?Fish Finders? which was somewhat fitting.” http://www.wififofum.org/

Head over to engadget for the full monty, and for now, Torrone passed p2pnet several things to bear in mind, namely:

  • Keep all the gear away from water, sealed up, etc…
  • Don’t paddle near tons of people in their houseboats/biz/boats, some dude with a “device” tends to weird people out.
  • Add an extra 45 minutes to your planned kayaking, that’s the time it’ll take to get readings etc…
  • Don’t set the device to turn off, ppcs are set to turn off after 5 min usually.
  • Don’t forget to bring a snack.
  • Don’t forget to bring gloves, you can blister easily paddling.
  • Sunscreen, don’t forget.
