Pakistan joins GÉANT global research web

p2pnet news view | P2P:- Europe’s GÉANT, the world’s largest multi-gigabit computer network dedicated to research and education, links to similar networks in a single universal research web.

Launched in 2000 by the European Commission and member states to upgrade Europe’s research and education networking infrastructure, it already connects researchers from Reykjavik to Vladivostok, serving around 30 million users in more 3,500 universities and research centres through 34 national research networks.

Now, thanks to a hook-up with EU-funded Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN), scientists and researchers in Pakistan are linked with others across the globe, says the European Union.

TEIN and the US National Science Foundation (NSF) agreed to link with the Pakistan Education Research Network (PERN), it says, going on:

“Using European networks, Pakistani scientists from 60 universities and institutes, linked via the Pakistan Education Research Network (PERN), may work with their peers on research projects that require fast data transfers to share information across the globe. PERN reaches GÉANT via its new link with the EU-funded Asia-spanning network TEIN. It will also connect Pakistani scientists to those in the United States through the TransPAC2 initiative.”

The connection to TEIN was co-funded by PERN and the NSF, says the EU, adding:

“Through this link, Pakistan is the first of a series of new countries joining TEIN3, the next generation of EU-funded Asian research networks. PERN uses this new 155 millions of bits per second (or Mbps) connection between Karachi and the TEIN3 network Point of Presence in Singapore, which is supplied by Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL).”
