Big Music blacklists Morpheus
p2pnet.net News:- Big Music has blackisted StreamCast Networks, owner of the p2p file sharing application Morpheus, says ceo Michael Weiss.
And unless StreamCast denounces p2p and / or resolves the lawsuit, it’ll stay there, says a voicemail message.
Hollywood has already destroyed Napster, Aimster and Audiogalaxy and now wants to similarly eliminate Morpheus and Grokster and the other commercial and independent p2p apps in its bid to gain total control of the emerging commercial p2p file sharing industry, and how people handle music and other digital media online.
“They’re afraid to give customers an opportunity to purchase legitimate files within a p2p environment,” a Morpheus spokesman told p2pnet.
Morpheus and Grokster are head-to-head with the movie studios and major record labels in what amounts to Hollywood -v- p2p.
Testifying at today’s senate committtee hearing into p2p technology, Weiss was quoting from a voicemail of Real Networks executive Richard ‘Ryc’ Brownrigg.
The, “labels have blacklisted you guys,” says Brownrigg in the message. “So that is the problem we’ve got.
“Basically, what they’re saying is you’ve got to denounce P2P, and/or resolve the lawsuit is what you have to do. And so, until they resolve the lawsuit, they’re going to keep you on the blacklist, which means I’m probably not going to get much latitude to do anything.”
Now, “Most immediately, we ask you to direct the Federal Trade Commission and/or Department of Justice to investigate the apparently collusive, anti-competitive conduct in restraint of trade by the music industry,” Weiss declared.
