Ottawa professor ex-sex trade worker, claim emails
p2pnet news view | Freedom:- A part-time professor in the University of Ottawa’s criminology department is a former prostitute.
So says a “series of widely circulated e-mails,” according to the Canwest News Service.
But associations representing undergraduate and graduate students at the university have issued a joint statement defending the professor and denouncing the nature of the personal attacks against her, says the Ottawa Citizen, stating:
“Mary Bowen [right], president of the university’s Undergraduate Criminology Students’ Association, said yesterday she doesn’t know the professor, but said there is a link of trust between professors and students — which is why students are defending the professor and are calling for an investigation into the source of the e-mail.
“The source needs to be discovered and we need to find out why someone would want to exploit someone to this extent,” says Bowen in the story.
The emails began last week and included, “semi-nude photos of a woman and links to escort service websites, e-mail correspondence, and a transcript of an interview purportedly between a university researcher and a sex worker marked ‘Internal Office Use Only’ and ‘Private & Confidential’,” says Canwest.
On its web site, “Last Thursday, an anonymous e-mail, which purports to convey information about one of our part-time professors, was distributed to various members of the University of Ottawa community,” says the university, going on »»»
The University immediately began looking into various aspects of the matter, including important issues relating to privacy, and the possible breach of confidentiality relating to research data.
At this time, it does not appear that any uOttawa e-mail account was compromised. However, we are reviewing all of these issues.
The University of Ottawa hires professors based on academic merit and will continue to do so. We are satisfied that the professor in question had the appropriate academic qualifications when hired, and she continues to teach her assigned courses.
