Netflix stops used DVD sales

I have some news for those of you who purchase previously viewed DVDs through the Netflix Web site.
As you know, our core business is delivering great movie rentals to you on DVD by mail and instantly to the computer and TV, so we’ve decided it makes sense for us to focus exclusively on that. This means we will stop selling previously viewed DVDs through the Web site. We’re sorry for any inconvenience for those of you who regularly purchase DVDs at Netflix, but we’re excited about being able to spend the extra time focusing on continually improving our core rental business for you.
Online sales will continue through the end of the day on November 30th. Until then, please feel free to shop our wide selection of previously viewed titles available at prices as low as $5.99
Wonder why?
Could Vivendi Universal, EMI, Warner Music and Sony BMG and their RIAA have anything to do with it, do you think?
Stay tuned.
NetVo?
Meanwhile in other news, as they say, Netflix, which recently signed a deal with Tivo, says it’s going to stop selling DVDs already rented by subscribers.
Tivo signed up with CinemaNow and Jaman, “to put those streaming video services on their latest boxes,” says PC Magazine, going on:
“Now Netflix has joined the party, offering some real clout to TiVo as not just a DVR, but as a content delivery service.
“You’ll need to have both a Netflix and a TiVo subscription, plus a TiVo Series3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL. If you have all that, however, the movies and other content can be played via the TiVo box for free. Movies will be streamed either from a wired or wireless Internet connection, and must apparently be specified and managed via the Netflix Web site (and not from the TiVo interface, apparently).”
NetVo should be rolled out in December, the story adds.

I’ve heard it requires additional licensing to both rent and sell videos that isn’t needed for either one alone. That could be the reason for this change.
