YouTube to offer feature flicks

Another is: can enough ads can be crammed into a streaming movie to make it pay without also turning viewers off by totally swamping them with unwanted commercials?

And they arise because Google’s YouTube may start offering feature films produced by “one of the biggest [unnamed] Hollywood movie studios possibly as early as next month,” says CNet News.

For months, “Google, YouTube’s parent company, has been talking to the major film companies about launching an ad-supported, streaming movie service,” says the story.

“It’s not imminent,” said an [unnamed] executive. “But it’s going to happen. I would say you can expect to see it, if all goes well, sometime within the next 30 to 90 days.”

Will people sit still — literally — while they have endless ads forced on them?

“Another sticking point with some of the film companies is Google’s insistence on using a specific ad format for feature films, according to two studio sources,” says the story, adding:

“They declined to specify which ad unit Google prefers — whether it’s prerolls or postrolls or something else — but said some of the studios want the final say on how to advertise to viewers.

“Google declined to discuss specifics, but a company spokeswoman issued this statement: ‘We are in negotiations with a variety of entertainment companies. Our goal is to offer maximum choice for our users, partners, and advertisers’.”

    Meh. They are just playing catch up ball with hulu, fancast, etc… which are ad supported, which does kind of suck. The breaks are much shorter than broadcast, cable, or satellite programming, like 15 or 30 seconds total. They do insert about 8 breaks into a typical movie which even when they are short pretty much destroys the flow of the film for me. If you can stand to watch a movie on broadcast TV you’ll probably like hulu and/or youtube hosted movies. If the ads drive you crazy then it’s the same old thing, except for being on-demand, which is kind of cool. The bottom line is, big media is going to get it’s pound of flesh, or die trying. I’m hoping for the latter. The world really would be a better place without them.

    works on embedded ads, typically coming from another source than the actual movie. and proven effective for msnbc, fox and other broadcast mainstream morons that embed pre/post ads to a video where, YOU ONLY WANT TO WATCH THE ACTUAL CONTENT.

    remember, you PAY for your internet access, feeding me ads on my dime is unacceptable. I was amazed at the speeds with which websites now load sans ads.
