Canadian voices on copyright law

p2pnet news view | P2P | Politics:- The Conservative party holds a policy convention next week and documents posted by National Newswatch reveals that there are a several minor proposed changes to the party’s position on copyright.

First, there is a proposal to extend support for private copying of sound recordings to video as well.  The new provision would read that “the Conservative Party believes that the objectives of copyright legislation should be (i)(d) to continue to allow an individual to make copies of recordings of musical works and video for that person`s personal and individual use.”

Second, another reform reaffirms support for the elimination of the private copying levy with “the Conservative Party supports the elimination of the levy on blank recording materials.”

Third, “the Conservative Party believes that government should give consideration to educational public policy goals within the copyright  framework and work with industry to increase awareness and develop a public education campaign to better inform users and creators on the copyright laws in Canada.”

The key changes would be the two private copying proposals since together they foreshadow a policy position that broadens fair dealing for private copying of audio and video (ie. time shifting and format shifting) without further compensation through a private copying levy.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

I guess everyones negative comments about Jim Pretense (sorry if spelt incorrectly) have paid off.
Personally I would like to see an end to lobbying politicians behind closed doors, this is the main tactic used by the Recording Industry to influence legislation and cause citizens to suffer.

  2. Jim Pretense??? Says:

“Jim Pretense (sorry if spelt incorrectly)”

    It is not spelt incorrectly.

    http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pretense

    pretense (plural pretenses)

(US) A false or hypocritical profession, as, under pretense of friendliness; sham, pretext, claim; an effort to give some appearance or mislead.

    without pretense of accuracy

    Also from the same site:

    false pretense (plural false pretenses)

    representation of untrue facts

I hear you want to go back to middle school because you say your life is too tough where you are now. Even if you could somehow manage to give yourself make-up and plastic surgery to LOOK like a middle-schooler, if you give them a false name, birth date, and so forth, you’ll be enrolling there under false pretenses.

    Jim, we remember:

    http://www.p2pnet.net/story/16289

A Google map is being used, without attribution and without copyright notice, says a p2pnet Reader’s Write, referring to Beaver’s posts on Michael Geist’s site.

    So?

Well, the guy committing this dastardly act of copyright violation is no less a personage than Canadian federal industry minister Jim Prentice, who’s currently doing his best to promote a new Canadian Copyright act which blatantly ignores the wants and needs of Canadians in the best interests of various American cartels, with the entertainment industry up front.

  4. freeman Says:

Let’s get something straight. Canadian Copyright Act is an “Act” and not Law.
    http://www.cb-cda.gc.ca/info/act-e.html

It is an “Act” and not Law for any human being in Canada.
As fas as I understand it Acts are for business law and Not for Common Law [which we all live by on the land] and or they are additions to laws which You may not have agreed to verbally or in witting. This is true if you have not Knowingly signed any agreement recognizing any such Act.

I have not seen anywhere in the general public where this has been Notified to each and every human being in Canada, taught in schools, posted so every person can read it And Understand It or agreed with it.

Therefore as I understand this situation … no human being is liable to any or part of this Act unless they are a lawyer, part of Corporation or a person doing business in accordance to Corporate Acts.

The excuse of anyone saying “you should know all the …” rules, laws, acts, regulations, codes, etc. is ludicrous since there are so many that no one person can even phantom learning a good part of them.

I for one, do not understand any of them since I was not or am party to any lawyer speak. I don’t see it anywhere in God’s laws [the bible] either. Therefore the Canadian Copyright Act and people who created it can go piss up a rope!
