Dell self-encrypting laptop

p2pnet news view | Security:- Dell is building Seagate FDE drives into its Latitude and Precision notebook lines and the OptiPlex 960 desktop, says The Register.

“The new Momentus FDE laptop drives, 5400- and 7200-rpm models with capacities up to a half-terabyte, deliver powerful protection against unauthorized access to information on lost or stolen laptop computers,” says eChannelLine, going on the Momentus drives feature government-grade encryption.

The drives can be enterprise-managed with firmware that works with software such as ePO to configure and manage the drives, or in a BIOS-managed mode in which a BIOS password is used to authenticate the system, says The Register, adding:

“This latter mode, Seagate says, can be used to retrofit an FDE Momentus into an existing notebook and so secure its data against loss.”

Neither story mentions price.

  1. Eric Says:

Great to hear this about Seagate, the only external hard drive company from whom I buy.

Wish I could give Dell that sort of exclusivity.

  2. Peter Green Says:

If these HDD’s use ‘government-grade encryption’ I guess then they have zero protection, at least going by UK standars!
