US Army launches YouTube rival

p2pnet news view P2P | Movies:- This summer a “lighthearted and positive depiction of the service of women officers and sailors aboard aircraft carriers and in Navy squadrons” was dropped from YouTube.

“Shot aboard the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, it shows Sailors using safety equipment inappropriately,” said p2pnet.

Women of CVN76, ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ was the work of an unnamed airman and included, “fleeting shots of the door to the ship’s nuclear power plant and of a Sailor dancing while wearing a full-body radiation suit”.

But the US Army has gone the other way, actively encouraging personnel to create their own videos for posting not on YouTube, but on TroopTube, a military movie site from Military OneSource.

“The site is designed for easy use, so you can quickly upload videos and share the simple joys of each day with each other, either privately or with the whole world. Sign up today and begin sharing videos by clicking here,” it says, emphasising, “Military OneSource is an authorized Department of Defense program for Active Duty, Guard, Reserve and their families”.

When we went for a look at 6:18 am Pacific, the site had two postings: general David Petraeus in a, “message to the troops”; and, “Wives’ shout-out to 3rd Brigade A Troop 133 Cavalry”.

Rumours that Google has approached the US military to organise advertising on TroopTune shouldn’t necessarily be discounted.

A website dedicated to videos created by trailer-trash military grunts… eh, either noone will use it, or it will get heavy criticism if the posts become too much like the “faces of death” movies.
