Really, it’s very simple: don’t buy stuff that uses non-standards. For example, I don’t buy Sony products because I feel that the corporation is run by idiots who must impose their will on the marketplace. I don’t want a physical disc for my portable gaming system, and I don’t want another special memory card format for my camera.
Sony is resistant to change; remember ATRAC? They resisted MP3 up until about two years ago, instead attempting to push proprietary software and encoding formats on a rapidly iPod-ifying marketplace. They have begun to realize that in a competitive marketplace they have to actually compete, which may mean selling things that consumers want.
I say good for them, and I hope the rest of the companies who seem to think they can invent their own proprietary replacements for perfectly good standards see the Sony story as a lesson they would rather not have to learn themselves and adjust their mindsets accordingly.
