PeerMatrix ad-crap targets P2P users

p2pnet news view | Advertising:- If you’re a P2P file sharer, they’re after you.

But this time, they’re not working for the entertainment cartels.

They’re trying to persuade advertisers they can get you to watch their crap ads.

“PeerMatrix Inc. announced today the first public release of the PeerMatrix software, which for the first time allows advertisers to deliver ads to 200 million people who use file-sharing software (also known as ‘Peer-To-Peer’ or ‘P2P’ software) like LimeWire and Shareaza,” said a spam message on Friday.

It was from a Canadian company and it went on, ” ‘It’s a completely new type of advertising,’ said Bernard Trest, president of PeerMatrix Inc. ‘For the first time, advertisers can target 200 million file sharers who were previously off limits to advertising’.”

And no doubt every one of the 200 million had agreed to have unwanted ads spammed at them.

Comparing it to Google AdWords, “The software works by taking incoming search requests from P2P users and dynamically generating search results that exactly match those searches,” boasts the company. “The user who conducts the search is therefore persuaded to download and view the ad.”

“How are P2P users identified over other kinds users?” – p2pnet asked Trest. And, “How they ‘persuaded’ to view an ad they didn’t ask to see ?”

PeerMatrix software, “advertisers [sic] to users specifically on P2P networks and although the software currently only operates on the Gnutella network, we plan to expand the software to other P2P networks at a later date,” he responded, going on:

“What this means is that PeerMatrix software will advertise to anyone using P2P file sharing software such as LimeWire, MP3 Rocket, Shareaza, and so forth. Up until now, no software or service existed that allowed people to advertise on LimeWire, Shareaza, and so forth, so PeerMatrix is the first software that allows anyone to advertise on the P2P networks and target a previously untapped market of hundreds of millions of users.”

Hmmm. MP3 Rocket, eh?

MP3Rocket is a p2pnet advertiser and given that all our dealings with the company have been straight up and straightforward, we were surprised to find them apparently lending their name to a tacky project such as this.

But that wasn’t the case — not that we thought it was.

“Thanks for the heads up on PeerMatrix’s new p2p spam technology,” MP3Rocket’s Paschal Rousseau told p2pnet, going on:

“MP3Rocket currently has technology to block PeerMatrix’s newest AdMorph or phony video file technology.

“When will PeerMatrix learn that the secret to having success is providing customers with what they want not trying to trick them with morphing AdWords on their videos.”

Stay tuned.

so this forces individuals to watch certain ads?

    Bittorrent people!

Advertiser has an unwritten contract with the consumer. You watch our ads and we will give you something for free. Commercial TV give me shows and news to watch, Google gives me free search engine, P2Pnet gives me something to read on my coffee break.

PeerMatrix is P2P SPAM. It is like billboards on the side of the road, gives nothing and ugly ups the place.

    Shame

This won’t last too long. There will I am sure come a way to remove it’s intrusion. I personally hate ads and take offense to them being forced on me.

KChan above mentions you get something for free for ads. Not really…it costs you your time. Time better spent doing something else. You know the old adage, time is money.

Those that host ads have managed to convince the public that it is necessary. What the real deal is, is it’s another way to double dip for income.

And I gather this will be for public and open p2p spots. If you are private, I am curious to see how this will work. One way or another, the ads will be gone.

As a last resort, I encourage you to do just what I do. When I walk in a store, before I even pick up the product I am considering, if I remember seeing that maker taking up and wasting my time with ads, then it’s on to the next product.

Think about this…you don’t get anything of value for an ad in extra product capability. What you get is your time wasted and additional hidden costs in the product to pay for those ads. So it costs you more for nothing of value and that makes the product not better but more expensive. You are paying in essence for them wasting your time. That’s not exactly what I buy a product for. I buy a product to do a job or function and I expect it to do so with a reasonable cost and to truly do the task.

When I see ads, the first thought I have is that there is something wrong with that product. That maker is having to pay to get your attention about it. If it is a great product, you don’t have to do that. People will tell other people what works for them and they will do so at no charge. They will also tell you what does not do so well. Listen to them when you need something; ask. That’s the real deal when it comes to a commercial, not the irritating ad.
