Anti-spyware bill is nigh

p2pnet.net News:- "Last-minute amendments were made to the bill to make it more palatable to technology companies, who had voiced concern that its broad language would stymie legitimate uses of some kinds of software, such as anti-virus updates, patching mechanisms, and so-called ’supportware’," says TechWeb News here.

The quote refers to Mary Bono’s "Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act" which demands clear and conspicuous warnings on applications infested with spyware and calls for fines of up to $3 million to be imposed on transgressors.

SPY would compel companies collecting consumer information to say they’re doing so, and also to identify themselves and provide street and valid e-mail addresses.

Now out of committee and on its way for consideration by the full House, it also bans keystroke logging, computer hijacking and the display of adverts that can’t be closed unless a computer is turned off.

A similar bill authored by senators Barbara Boxer, Ron Wyden and Conrad Burns is on its way through the Senate.
