Is eBay’s PayPal less than safe?

p2pnet news view | Security:- Is eBay’s PayPal so unsafe it needs a special security key?

Apparently, that’s the case.

PayPal Canada has a, “new security measure for Canadian Paypal users concerned about the integrity of their account,” says Digital Home.

“The PayPal Security Key creates random temporary security codes that help safeguard your PayPal account when you log in and comes in two types: token and mobile.”

And they’re even charging users for it.

The $5 security key-ring gadget is an electronic device, or ‘token,’ designed to ccreate a security code every 30 seconds, says the story, going on:

“Paypal users with the security token must enter the temporary code along with their standard username and password in order to sign into their Paypal account.”

But hasn’t eBay already launched a security thingy?

“Are eBay’s PayPal accounts a little less than, well, safe?” – p2pnet wondered exactly a year ago today, going on »»»

To, “help keep user accounts secure,” its PayPal is testing a new Verisign tool, says AuctionBytes.com.

It can be attached to a keychain and, “generates a unique six-digit security code about every 30 seconds,” says the story. “Users enter that code when they log in to their PayPal or eBay account with their regular user name and password. Because the numbers on the device change continually, the code used to sign in expires, providing a higher level of security.”

PayPal users who, “want to use the enhanced security feature must order online – once the feature is available – and pay a one-time non-refundable fee of $5,” says the story.

“The fee is waived for PayPal Business accounts, and there is no recurring charge.”

Maybe it’s just taken a year to get the scheme rolling.

All you need to know about how unsafe PayPal is… or rather, how unsafe your bank account is if you use PayPal.

  3. Morons Says:

General passwords in databases if the database gets hacked, a hacker could download the entire user/pass lists. A security token offers a deal of protection that is greater that say triple AES with a random integer. CRACK THAT!
