Pay Facebook $873M, Canadian spammer told
p2pnet news view | Advertising: A US court has ordered a Canadian spammer to pay $873 million — that’s eight hundred and seventy-three million dollars — in damages for sending unwanted messages to Facebook users.
Judge Jeremy Fogel has ordered Montreal’s Adam Guerbuez and his company, Atlantis Blue Capital, to pay $436.2 million in statutory damages and another $436.2 million dollars in aggravated statutory damages for violations of the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act (CAN-SPAM), says Agence France-Presse.
Does that mean Facebook is suddenly going to collect close to billion dollars from a Canadian spammer?
Unlikely, Max Kelly, Facebook’s director of security is quoted as saying in the story: “It’s unlikely that Guerbuez and Atlantis Blue Capital could ever honolr [sic] the judgment rendered against them.”
Facebook began legal action against Guerbuez in August, claiming he’d obtain the passwords of Facebook users and was bombarding them with millions of messages about sexual products and drugs, says AFP, adding:
“Judge Fogel also permanently barred Guerbuez, who lives in Montreal, and Atlantis Blue Capital from any future contact with Facebook.”
That presumably leaves the rest of the world wide open.
