Greenland achieves greater independence
p2pnet news view Freedom | Politics:- Congratulations, Greenlanders!
A home-governing Danish territory, it’s decided to increase independence from its, “former colonial master as it attempts to create an economy based on natural resources,” says Bloomberg News.
The proposal was drafted jointly by Danish and Greenlandic politicians, Greenland’s Nuuk-based home rule office said on its Web site, according to the story, which says a referendum held yesterday drew 28,268 voters for a turnout of 71.96%.
“Under the proposal, the population of 56,000 will keep annual subsidies from Denmark that account for half of public spending, while receiving almost full control of natural resources, including oil, gold, zinc and lead,”" says the story.
“The vote, which also recognized Greenlandic Inuit natives as a people, will lead to a future referendum on complete independence from Denmark, Greenland Premier Hans Enoksen has said.”
Greenlanders, “celebrated in the streets of capital Nuuk even before voting closed,” says Deutsche Welle, going on, “Despite heavy snow and temperatures of minus 5 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit), officials reported long lines at voting booths.”
Now, “Greenlandic — an Inuit language — is set to become the official language on the world’s largest island,” says the story, adding:
“Additionally, Greenlanders were to be recognized as a people. About 85 percent of the island’s 57,000 inhabitants are ethnic Greenlanders.”

Abkhazia and South Ossetia held similar referenda in the past, and their independence was not recognized by the SO CALLED “international community”, largely driven by American interests.
