Stephen Hawking to teach in Canada
p2pnet news view | Off Topic:- Stephen Hawking has met his Waterloo.
And he’s happy about it.
He’s accepted an appointment as a research chair at Waterloo’s Perimeter Institute, founded by BlackBerry inventor Michael Lazaridis.
But he may, or may not, “collect on a cosmological bet made with his long-time friend and colleague, Neil Turok,” says the Guelph Mercury.
Turok, Perimeter’s new executive director, once bet Hawking a satellite designed to produce maps of the cosmos when it’s launched next year won’t find evidence to support Hawking’s pet cosmological theory, known as a inflation, which is thought to shape the “beginning” of everything in the universe, it says.
“I told him that I would bet him any amount of money he names, for even odds … I was a bit rash,” says Turok in the story.
Hawking will be in Waterloo for regular six-week visits starting next summer.
“While here, he will work on his theories while giving lectures and mentoring young physicists who come from around the world to work on theoretical problems that deal with what space is made of and how the whole cosmos got started in the first place,” says the post.
